It can be daunting to think about how to start a career but if you try and think about it in steps might be easier. The first thing I feel is to decide what are you passionate about/interested in. To help you translate how your interests may lead to a career, there are many free resources online (such as a personality test that will show what careers might align best) or through your guidance counselors at your high school or career advisors at the college level. Once you start narrowing the list of careers down, you can then research own your own or again through the above-mentioned resources to determine what is the path to follow in terms of any requirements (academic, certifications, etc). You can then weigh the pros and cons of the narrowed list of career options which will help you choose the right path for you. Also remember that any time if the path you initially chose may not be the right fit for you as you evolve, you can ALWAYS reroute and choose a different path. The job you start with does not have to be the one you end your career. Most of us zig zag our way through our careers based on various development or growth opportunities that will present themselves to you as you mature and change. Taking the first step can feel daunting but there is no right or wrong way to do something! You will figure it out and use your resources and network to help with that process.

I do hope this helps you.

Susan’s Answer

Hello Hana,

There are several paths you can explore for your future. Have you thought about attending college? If so, internships during your college years are a great idea. They can pave the way to a job at the same company, kick-starting your career. If college isn't in your plans, how about trade schools? If you're not graduating next year, it might be worthwhile to check out the programs your school's affiliated trade school offers.

There are also other career paths, like healthcare, where you can take specific courses and earn a certification. Consider fields like massage therapy, esthetics, CNA, or medical assisting. Remember, we all start our careers with minimal experience, but as we learn and grow over the years, we gain more responsibilities, climb up to leadership positions, and earn higher salaries. I hope this gives you some food for thought!
