Are there any job types or opportunities in psychology that aren't specifically counseling?

Is there a psycology job where you can just study how the brain works and what causes trauma and things like that instead of counseling people face to face?

Definitely! For starters, look up Daniel Amen and what he's said and written and done over the years and see if anything from him is interesting to you.

Michael’s Answer

Absolutely, I am a clinical neuropsychologist, and if I were working full time in this, I would be doing psychological assessments of individuals suspected of having some brain damage or condition. As it is I am a police psychologist and I test applicants to the police department for disqualifying psychological conditions, such as personality disorder. Psychological assessment is a major subspecialty, and it can include learning disabilities or cognitive disorders for schools, personality assessments for police, fire, and pilots, and dementia evaluations in seniors.

Hello Elaina,

There's a broad spectrum of career paths that psychologists can explore beyond direct therapy. These include roles like university professors, researchers, psychometric testing specialists, and clinical or administrative supervisors. When charting your career path, it's crucial to choose a college program that aligns with your specific goals.

You can discover more about the various graduate programs available by conducting an online search, consulting with college counselors, or engaging in conversations with graduate students who can share their experiences.

Remember, therapy is just one of the many career paths you can embark on as a licensed psychologist. I hope this response aids you in exploring the path that resonates with you. It's important to remember that your initial choice isn't set in stone - there's always room for a change of heart. Follow the career path that you believe will bring you the most joy.

Best regards,

Mark V.
