How to get into Tsinghua university as an international student?

I'm 11th grade student in Mongolia, and I hope to get into Tsinghua as an international student. I have HSK4 score and planning on getting HSK5 score before graduating. And my English is quite not bad and hoping to get IELTS score as soon as possible. I have interest in physic and math and have achieved some medals in these subjects. And I have interest in chess, but not so good at it. My grades are not bad, straight A mostly, few Bs. So, my question is how to get into THU, am I qualified enough, and please tell me the steps of applications, including online application process, interview and examination process, and hope you can tell me about scholarships. Thank you!

Hello Nomi,

It's fantastic to hear about your interest in pursuing higher education at the top university in China! As a native of China, my journey to university was quite different. However, I've gathered some insights from Chinese social media that I believe will be beneficial to you.

1. Eligibility Criteria
1.1 Language Proficiency: First, for the Chinese language - THU require Chinese language proficiency of HSK Level 5 or above, with each subject scored over 60 points. Chinese language proficiency of HSK Level 4 (with each subject scored over 60 points) is eligible too, however, applicants must improve to Level 5 or above with each subject scored over 60 points within the first academic year in Tsinghua University. Students who do not achieve this will be required to leave Tsinghua University. So I believe it would be better you can get HSK5 before application. There's certain risk if you apply with HSK4.

Second, if English isn't your first language, you'll need to provide an English language test score (e.g., TOEFL/IELTS). The specific score requirements for undergraduate aren't mentioned, but for Master/PhD programs, non-native English speakers must score at least 85 in TOEFL or 6.5 in IELTS. I suggest reaching out to them for specific English language test requirements.

1.2 GPA: There's no explicit grade requirement, but a higher GPA is always better. Your acceptance largely depends on the year of application and the qualifications of other applicants. Maintain your excellent academic record, and you'll stand a good chance.

1.3 Additional Requirements: Besides your high school transcripts, you'll need to submit a Certificate of National/Regional Graduation Examination/Matriculation Examination and results of international standard tests (e.g., SAT/ACT/A-Level/AP/IB) or International STEM Test. You should contact THU to verify the score requirements for these tests.

2. Application Process and Scholarships: You can find all relevant information, including application details, timelines, scholarships, and the above-mentioned requirements on this website: https://international.join-tsinghua.edu.cn/Admission1/Freshmen_Scholarships1.htm

3. Post-Application Steps: After submitting your online application, it will be reviewed for completeness and correctness. If you pass this stage, you'll have to take an Integrative Test, which typically includes a virtual interview and a writing test. Keep in mind that the testing method may vary depending on the year of application.

3.1 Interview: The virtual interview is generally acceptable. Somebody mentioned he/she was interviewed by three professors and it lasts about an hour. You'll be expected to answer questions in Chinese, although there will also be a question to be answered in English.

The questions are based on your resume/personal statement and may include a brief introduction, your reasons for choosing THU, and your chosen program. Other questions may relate to how did you learn Chinese in your home country, potential challenges of study life in China, how you handle difficulties in the past and in the future, some other questions about yourself based on your background, for example, why do you like playing chess, or some other question regards to your home country. Ensure you're well-prepared and familiar with your resume and personal statement.

3.2 Writing Test: This is usually the final test and involves writing on current affairs in English. There's no time limit, and it resembles writing a short essay.

While the information I've provided may vary depending on the year of application, it should give you a general idea of what to expect. I hope you find it helpful. Best of luck with your application, and I hope you have an incredible university experience in China!
