Hi, it's hard to say. You can start this journey without any experience at the apprentice level, but you wouldn't be doing anything that requires an inspection or certification until you get some experience and demonstrate passing welds. To be a good welder is different. I've seen people pick it up quickly and I've seen people struggle. There really isn't a set time and everyone is different and that's perfectly fine. It's a vast field with a bunch of options and a ton of specialities. A phenomenal stick welder who welds structural steel all day may struggle with tig welding aluminum or some of the exotic materials and that goes both ways. There's a knowledge portion to this as well as muscle memory. I learned and welded in the military, it took me a few years to get the point where I was competent. Good luck.
