It typically depends on what type of mechanic you are. Understanding your chosen field of profession and the nuances of that field typically takes time. The better you are at understanding mechanical things and how they work, along with what the work with in the system, generally helps you become a great mechanic. In my field (aviation) becoming a good mechanic can take many years (6-8 years) before you start to fully understand how all of the systems work, and how they work together. Knowing these things makes it easy to troubleshoot problems that may arise. You also start learning safe, but faster ways of fixing those problems. Each aircraft has their own personality, even if they are the same type, I.E. Airbus 380, UH-60, etc... they are temperamental. The same goes in the auto industry or any other industry that requires a mechanic. I spent 22 years in the US Army and still have things to learn about my chosen field. Don't get discouraged, everything is an opportunity to learn something new. And if you're not learning something new everytime you go out to fix something, then you're doing it wrong and typically will not be a great mechanic. Good luck out there!!!

I would say it can take between 2-5 years! It all depends on how you learn new things and how long it takes for you to be 100% confident on your abilities
