Hi Cheyanne,

Kudos to you for having the courage to pursue your dreams! That's a great start. I recommend you write down all your dreams and goals. Once you've done this, prioritize them from most to least important. Then, work on making those dreams come true. Best of luck on this thrilling journey!

Have you ever used SMART goals? SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. Setting your goals using these criteria makes sure they're realistic and can be achieved within a certain time period. This method can be a strong ally in helping you reach your dreams.

Hi Cheyanne - I have the same issue! Honestly, the answer is as easy as "make a list". What do you need to do, when do you need to do it, how long will it take. Use a calendar, or post-it notes, or make it fun and place a decorative chalkboard in your room so that you can make random notes to yourself. I will say, making a list will sometimes feel stressful when you see everything you may need to accomplish, but the beauty of a list is that you can also re-prioritize at any time. Soon, you will fall into a routine that will allow you to feel calm about the tasks at hand. Good luck!

Josh’s Answer

Hi Cheyanne,

This is a great question and one that I struggle with often! I would just like to say that it's okay if your goal changes. Sometimes, more information comes to our attention and our perspective changes and that's okay.

However, when it comes to keeping goals, it's very important to understand why you want to achieve the goal and how it's related to your desires. For example, I have a desire to feel healthy, so I exercise, stay away from sugar, and sleep well to meet this goal. If I did not have this desire, there would be nothing to fuel the motivation I need to achieve my goal. So, as you you evaluate your goals I would ask yourself "why do I really want to achieve this goal?" and to use the answer to this question as motivation.

Hope this helps, best wishes!

Enhancing your surroundings and adjusting your mindset are two concrete strategies that can help keep your attention on your goal.

Surroundings:
- Organize your living space and workspace
- Disable notifications on your mobile device
- Implement the Pomodoro Technique, a time management strategy that includes regular intervals for rest
- Reflect on the people you spend your time with and assess if they are supportive of your aspirations
- Evaluate the type of social media/news content you consume

Mindset:
- Assess if your goal truly excites you and make necessary adjustments if possible
- Concentrate on strengthening your willpower
- Cultivate a habit of expressing gratitude
- Maintain a positive outlook; your disposition plays a crucial role

Additional Tips:
- Monitor your progress through regular evaluations
- Find a person or a group to hold you accountable which can be very beneficial in maintaining focus
- Understand that substantial progress may not be visible every day, but continue taking small steps towards your goal; these small steps accumulate over time!
- Celebrate your progress by rewarding yourself!

In order to maintain focus, I recommend having a to do list with the main goal at the top of the page circled so you always remember your north star. I personally find having discrete tasks (daily, monthly, yearly) helps create a plan to execute against that main goal.

Setra’s Answer

I find that a timer works best for me, as I too am easily distracted. I start by making a list of the tasks I have to accomplish, estimating how much time it will take for each. Then I set the timer on my phone and begin, going task by task. Even if I don't complete the task, I still move on to the next one until I've gone through the list. This gives me a more realistic idea of how much time it will actually take me to complete each task, which helps me put together a more realistic timeline for accomplishing each task.

This helps even if I'm doing something simple like cleaning my home. I used to get so distracted that I'd wind up not finishing the cleaning of any of the rooms, sometimes creating even more of a mess in some areas. For example, if I had left a sweater in the livingroom, when I went to the closet to put the sweater away, I'd get distracted and start reorganizing the closet, taking some things from the closet to put into a dresser drawer in my bedroom. Then I'd go into the bedroom to put the things in a drawer and realize that I needed to reorganize my drawers. Before I knew it, hours had gone by and I'd have items from the closet and the dresser out on the bed or a chair and I'd still not be finished cleaning.

Now, I set the timer for each room, giving the kitchen and bathroom a little extra time. If I'm cleaning the living room and I pick up something that belongs in the bedroom, instead of going into the bedroom to put it away, I place it right inside the bedroom door. I don't put that item away until I'm cleaning the bedroom.

Using a timer makes tasks kind of fun because I'm working against the challenge of the clock. Then I reward myself when I've reached the end of my task list without allowing myself to become distracted. Something like giving myself permission to watch another episode of one of my favorite shows, or having some chocolate chip cookies.

Good luck to you and I hope this helps!

Hi Cheyanne!

Staying laser-focused on a single goal can be quite a task, especially in our buzzing, distraction-filled world. But don't worry, there are several strategies to help you keep your eyes on the prize. Let's dive into some effective ways to maintain your focus:

1. Define Clear and Specific Goals: The first step to staying focused is to set clear and specific goals. Avoid vague goals as they can lead to confusion. By setting precise goals, you give yourself a clear target, which can boost your concentration and motivation.

2. Rank Your Tasks: Prioritizing tasks is another key to staying focused. Identify the most crucial tasks related to your goal and tackle them first. This way, you won't get swamped by less important tasks that might divert your attention.

3. Break Big Goals into Smaller Steps: Large goals can be daunting, causing you to lose focus. To avoid this, break your main goal into smaller, manageable steps. Celebrating small wins along the way can also keep your motivation high.

4. Establish a Routine: Having a routine can greatly help in maintaining focus. By setting specific times for goal-related tasks, and minimizing distractions during these times, you train your brain to automatically focus when it's time to work.

5. Cut Down Distractions: Distractions can be a big obstacle to staying focused. Identify what usually diverts your attention and take steps to minimize them. This could mean turning off phone notifications, creating a quiet workspace, or using website blockers.

6. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: Techniques like mindfulness and meditation can improve focus. By training your mind to be present, you can reduce mental clutter and enhance your ability to concentrate on the task at hand.

7. Find Accountability and Support: Sharing your goals with others can provide extra motivation. Consider finding a partner or a support group to regularly check in on your progress and provide encouragement.

8. Look After Your Well-being: Your overall health plays a big role in maintaining focus. Make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating well, and exercising regularly. Taking care of your health boosts energy levels and enhances cognitive function, making it easier to focus.

9. See Failure as a Learning Chance: Setbacks are natural when working towards a goal. Instead of letting these challenges distract you, see them as learning opportunities. This mindset can help you stay resilient and focused on your goal.

In conclusion, staying focused on a goal requires a mix of strategies and habits. By setting clear goals, ranking tasks, breaking down goals, establishing routines, cutting down distractions, practicing mindfulness, finding support, looking after your health, and seeing failure as a learning chance, you can greatly improve your focus. Remember, building focus takes time and practice, so be patient with yourself.

Erika’s Answer

Hi Cheyanne!

I struggle with this a lot too. Especially if you have one really big goal, it can be really overwhelming. I would do what I like to call "turning a big rock into little pebbles". I break down the goal I have into smaller, easier to achieve goals. For example, if your goal is to clean your room, examples of little pebbles would be making up the bed, folding clothes, etc. It feels good to check a tiny task off your list! Before you know it, all of your smaller tasks will be done.

Another thing I like to do is time myself. Give yourself 20 minutes to do a task, take a break, and try working again. I find if I sit and do one thing for an extended period of time, I feel tired and less motivated to actually complete it. Stepping away to take a break can help you reset and focus.

Hope this helps!
