Sujith’s Answer

The pay for a computer scientist can change based on things like education, experience, where they work, and the specific field or company. Usually, computer scientists earn a good salary because many people need their skills. Remember, computer science is always changing, and the skills that are needed can change too. Also, how much you earn and what you need to do for your job can be different in different places and fields. Make sure to keep up with what's happening in the market to make the best choices for your career. Websites like glassdoor.com can help you get an idea of what you might earn, but they won't give you the exact amount for every company.

I would highly suggest initiating your salary exploration on platforms such as Glassdoor. This is due to the fact that remuneration varies significantly based on factors like geographical location, company size, and so on. As for the journey to becoming a computer scientist, it's advisable to earn a degree in Computer Science or a similar field. Following this, aim to join a company or a startup that values its employees, fosters a healthy work environment, and is filled with supportive and friendly colleagues. If you can also discover a company that is involved in meaningful work that sparks your enthusiasm and makes you eager to start each day, that's a fantastic bonus. Wishing you all the best, Andrew!

Uma’s Answer

Hello Andrew,

The earning potential of a Computer Scientist is influenced by various factors such as their specific role, the company they work for, and their geographical location. Just like any other profession, a Computer Science degree opens up a vast array of opportunities - from high-level to low-level programming, research, and different types of projects and products. To prepare for these diverse roles, a formal education like a Bachelors in Computer Science or a related field such as Information Science, which is slightly less rigorous, can be beneficial.

However, before you set off on this journey, I highly recommend exploring programming courses in school to discover if it's a field you're passionate about and excel in. If you find that it's a perfect fit, aim for a reputable college that provides ample opportunities for internships. These internships allow you to further deepen your understanding by applying theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. Typically, performing well during an internship at a reputable company can lead to an entry-level position, and from there, your dedication and hard work can help you climb the career ladder.

When it comes to internships, you're spoilt for choice - you could go for a budding start-up, a medium-sized firm, or a well-established organization. Each of these options has its own advantages and drawbacks. In the NYC region, an entry-level programming role at a top-tier company can earn you an annual salary of 80-100K. Beyond that, the sky's the limit! Your future is in your hands, and you have the power to shape it. Good Luck - I hope this inspires you to take the next step forward.

Uma recommends the following next steps:

Explore programming courses in school to determine aptitude and interest.
Learn programming using free content like YouTube.
Volunteer your time to help non-profits do programming - explore volunteermatch.org that allows you to do this virtually from anywhere in the world.

Alejandro’s Answer

Hello Andrew,

I normally visit elementary and high schools during the spring, and I do a presentation of what I do as an IT developer, and the most common question that I get is how much do I make in my job?

I normally reply to them as follows: Currently the salary in this field is very good, but the most important thing that they need to look at is what they are passionate about and follow it, instead of following a salary range for find a career path.  When you do what you are passionate about, two things normally happen.

1)         You will be very good at what you do and enjoy it and become better every day.
2)         Money will come one way or the other.

However, if you try to go for a major that the only focus is because of the salary range, once in your journey you may not like it and end up changing career.

If you would like to follow computer science, check different colleges' curriculum to look at the subjects you will cover during your studies, that will give you a better idea.  As a salary you already got very good responses or sites, we can get more information.

Regards Andrew
