What can I do now to get involved with screenplay and directing?

I am a ninth grader in Oakland, California. Right now I am attending an art school where my focus is writing. We have many great opportunities to publish and start building a portfolio. I would love to be a #director and #screen-writer. I was wondering if there were any programs/#internships I could get involved with to gain more experience in this field #directing #screenwriting

I would suggest after graduating high school enroll in college as a theater major or enroll in film & television and screenwriting courses so you can further you career as a writer. Also I would suggest keep free writing screenplays now while you the time because college schedules can be busy.

Billy’s Answer

Direct something, write the play. With phones, we have access to cameras that are arguably more advanced than film cameras from 20 or 30 years ago. Don't let gear get in the way. Embrace the limitations you might have and create something around what you have access to. YouTube also makes it super easy to reach an audience and social media makes it easy to promote your work for free. Make small films so you have a portfolio after a few years that you can show off. Also, making films will get you actually experience because there are a lot of things that you will learn while making the movie that you might not have thought of otherwise.

Billy recommends the following next steps:

Write a script or just a short scene, it doesn't even have to be complete.
Shoot the scene!
Keep doing this to build a portfolio and develop your skills.
