Hi, Mark - this is an interesting question, and your list of considerations is a good one. I might add to the list:
- How will you measure success?
- What are milestones toward meeting your goal? (Sometimes, breaking down a goal into milestones helps you keep on track and is motivating)
- What are potential obstacles to meeting your goal and how could you overcome them?

Further, you may have different types of goals, such as career and personal. Personal goals may vary, such as learning a new skill, improving your health or fitness, purchasing a home, etc. You could use almost the same sets of questions to achieve them.

Good luck!

Richard J (Rich)’s Answer

The best way to help yourself accomplish your goals is to first make sure they are achievable and make sure they ae measurable. In deciding your career goals - you may have a primary goal (where you want to be) - but may need to establish interim goals in order to get to that point. And your "goal post" changes as you hit various stages in your life. For example - and lets say you want to be a Director in a Company. Your first goal to achieve would be to get your education associated with your area of interest, then a goal to be the best worker you can be, then a goal to be an outstanding lower level manager, so that you can meet your goal to be a Director. At each of these stages you will have to realize the requirements to achieve the next step and work toward those while being the best you can be at the stage you are at. Its an evolution.

What's your skillset? Numerous but currently Program Management
- What is your education in correlation to your goals? Formal education, on the job training, and experience
- What are the requirements for your goals? Those can only be determined by career choice and they change at each phase
- How are you helping yourself meet those requirements? Getting formal education and on the job training. Working as hard as I can as a team player on the job, listening and learning from co-workers and my leadership, and realizing I don't know everything and can always learn something to make me better
- How will you measure success? That's situational. But as you establish your goals, as I said they should be measurable. So, you can measure success by meeting your goals, Then again you can measure success by what you accomplish for those things that you did not plan on - but you faced either short or long term. Remember - there is a lot to learn from "failure" or things just not going your way as well.
- What are the milestones toward meeting your goal? (Sometimes, breaking down a goal into milestones helps you keep on track and is motivating) Too many to list - but they are the stepping stones to meeting your goals. Some of those milestones may be the requirements to build yourself up for the next step as mentioned previously
- What are potential obstacles to meeting your goal and how could you overcome them? This could be anything. Life has its twists and turns - and lots of unexpected happenings. Your path could be hindered or totally disrupted by life events or relationships. You never know what tomorrow will bring. And, how you overcome them is situational as well, but no matter what (and even with setbacks) do the best to stay positive, stay true to yourself, be professional, rely on others, and adjust. Most things do not go as you planned - even achieving your goals.

Hi Mark,

I've been thinking about the goals you've set for yourself, and I'd like to offer some advice from a sales executive's perspective.

Skillset Analysis: Reflect on your current skillset. How do your skills align with your goals? In sales, skills like communication, negotiation, and customer relationship management are crucial. Identify which of these skills you already possess and which ones you need to develop further.

Education and Goals Alignment: Consider how your educational background supports your goals. Does your degree or any additional courses you've taken provide the knowledge necessary for achieving your objectives? If there are gaps, think about additional training or education that could be beneficial.

Goal Requirements: Clearly define what's required to achieve your goals. In sales, this might include understanding market trends, product knowledge, or even specific sales targets. Make a list of these requirements to get a clear picture of what you need to focus on.

Meeting Requirements: Develop a plan for how you'll meet these requirements. This might involve seeking mentorship, attending workshops, or practicing specific skills. Set aside dedicated time each week to work on these areas.

Measuring Success: Decide how you will measure success. In sales, it could be the number of deals closed, customer feedback, or revenue generated. Choose metrics that align closely with your goals and track your progress regularly.

Milestones: Break down your goal into smaller, manageable milestones. This could be something like completing a sales training program, reaching a certain sales target, or expanding your professional network by a specific number. Celebrating these smaller victories can be incredibly motivating.

Overcoming Potential Obstacles: Anticipate potential obstacles and think about how to overcome them. Challenges in sales often include market competition, customer objections, or internal team dynamics. Developing strategies in advance, like improving product knowledge or enhancing team collaboration, can help you navigate these hurdles more effectively.

Always remember that achieving goals is a dynamic process. It requires flexibility, persistence, and a willingness to adapt as circumstances change. I'm confident that with your dedication and strategic approach, you'll make significant strides toward your objectives.

Ezra’s Answer

Greetings,

While there are no strict prerequisites for my aspiration of securing my next promotion, certain actions can certainly enhance my chances. I am progressively moving towards my goal by optimally utilizing my work hours. Fortunately, I have the opportunity to undertake training and courses online during my work hours. Hence, I strive to make the most of each day by concentrating on specific courses to broaden my expertise. There are suggested quantities of courses and service hours to finish that would qualify me as a suitable candidate. I take these suggested quantities and multiply them by three, to ensure that I leave no room for being outperformed by someone else.

Create small goals that you can achieve on the path of completing a larger goal. Some goals are not ever complete and must be maintained. Such as fitness. You have to always workout and eat right to stay fit.
