Hello, Jayda !

How wonderful that you are ready to start applying for a job ! You seem quite ambitious and I would like to give some advice that may be of some help. You are legally permitted to work at age 14 but you will need to get a Work Permit from your school. You can work doing food service or clerical work or in a supermarket. You can also consider private babysitting, dog walking, mowing lawns or odd jobs for private people. Do some reading on employment websites and do a search online for jobs for teenagers. All the information you need is right at your fingertips.

You can also go to places in person to fill out applications after asking them if they hire your age group. A lot of times you would apply on line so go to any nearby business websites to read about how to apply. They usually have an employment opportunity link on their website. Consider remote work also.

Focus on the skills that you already have and things you like to do which will lead you to a job you will enjoy. Have a discussion with your school guidance counselor about this as well as the school's social worker as the social worker may be able to refer you to organizations that can assist you directly with employment services referrals.

Best wishes to you !

It's tough at your age. The best way is to interview neighbors and find out what they need help getting done. They might need someone to fix things or complete tasks around the home. Even if you don't know how, you can spend some time researching how to do something on YouTube and then explaining to the homeowner (widows and old people are the best) what you've learned and get permission to try to work together on completing the task. Usually your ambition will be enough to convince them if you are confident enough to do it if they will help you by provit the materials and you'll do the labor. Most older people will enjoy the attention and being able to work with someone who is young and enthusiastic. You can sometimes start with offering to power wash the side walks or house. This is cheap and easy. Mowing the lawn every week and being careful to weed whip and do the curb. Home Depot is a great place to shop. Painting. Changing filters on the returns for the air conditioner. Getting new lightbulbs that are LED to save energy. Climbing a ladder to change out the batteries on the fire alarms. And each job will lead to new jobs. They will have to drive you to the store or places to drop off old clothes they want to get rid of. Dry cleaning. Old people don't know how to sell stuff on Facebook marketplace. You can take pictures and work on a commission. Don't be shocked if you meet greedy people or assholes. That's just part of the job. Eventually you'll find a few who really appreciate you and want you to succeed and aren't concerned about the money and will help you. Small landscaping projects. They won't expect you to know everything. The good ones will realize you're trying to make some extra cash and will be very supportive. You can also say something on your local HOA or community pages. You just have to find ways to help people and be honest and show integrity. And know when you meet people who are trying to take advantage of you to walk away.

Absolutely! In today's work industry there is a requirement for work history which is impossible for someone your age. But you don't always have to get an hourly paid job. If you're curious about a specific field, see if you know any adults working in the industry and see if you can be their protegè... Aka (also known as) their assistant. You can begin with the busy boring work of filing or organizing paper work. Organizing information, cleaning, basically doing the unwanted work to get yourself into the business. It may sound unappealing, but many people start from here after college, so if you can get your foot in the door at 14 you are way ahead of the rest. Once you have proven you can handle doing your job well, then you can begin to ask questions, take on more responsibilities, and really start learning the industry and business from within. It doesn't have to start with full time employment, or part time. You can start asking family friends what they do for work, and if any industry sounds interesting, ask them if they have any jobs or tasks that you could help get done. Then mention that you are looking for a job, but would like to get into something that you have interest in, rather than a standard teenager job that pays minimum wage. This type of conversation alone is very mature for a 14 yr old, so if you are given a chance... Don't let the employer down! Best of luck and feel free to follow up with any questions, or if you have any specific questions on how to apply this scenario to a unique opportunity.
Take care!

Love your ambition! At 14 you can be creative and reach out to your neighborhood community to understand what jobs are out there (ex. babysitting, dogwalking, etc). I also really recommend jobs that with flexible timing so that you can prioritize school and teach you skills that you are interested in learning. In high school I loved working at the front desk of a workout studio. That job taught me customer service skills, let me meet more community members where I gained babysitting jobs, and also let me do homework while the workout classes were in session.

Good for you! Already on the path to being self sufficient and hard working! It is not easy at 14 because you will need to have transportation and that is not always easy if you have parents that are also out working hard. There are often small jobs like babysitting, pet sitting, lawn care, snow removal. There are many senior citizens that could use help around the house or with errands! This can give you the extra cash and you can manage the transportation which I know was always a concern for my young teens. Be creative and look for what interests you. If you like animals, or people etc. Be creative! I see a start up venture in your future!!

You are so ambitious Jayda! In addition to the wonderful advice already shared another thing I've heard young people doing is selling arts and crafts through Etsy. My cousin and my aunt make scrunchies and together they sell them over Etsy. You will need an adult to help you set up your account and help mail physical items you are selling.
