Hi Josiah,

"Success" can mean many different things for different people. For some it means making a lot of money. For others it means being the first to attend university, for others it means getting admitted to med school, for still others it means having your own business. Your family might have ideas of ⁸what's an acceptable success. Your family and financial situation might have to be considered. But at the end of the day you need to decide what success is for you, what would make you feel satisfied and accomplished, and where you want to go, where you want to be.

If you want to go the academic route and get one (or more) degrees, you'll need to delay instant gratification and play the long game, i.e. invest in your future for a couple of years by attending university and earning a degree. Your successes there are: getting accepted into a program, passing exams, passing classes and eventually graduating. You are not going to be rich during this time but you are working towards a better future.

If that's not for you, you can do an internship or apprenticeship and start your career learning a trade and work your way up. In a few years you might have your own business.

But first you need to clarify for yourself what you really want to do. Once you have narrowed it down to a few possibilities, read up on the requirements, costs, and career possibilities, maybe do some internships or job-shadowing to get a clear picure of what these jobs entail. And then, go and make it happen!

Good luck!

Paul’s Answer

Life success is a series of progressive steps, some which might be difficult to detect, at least initially.

There is one thing I can recommend, which is try and make yourself as alluring as possible for employers.

This means going as far as you can with your college education, and continuing with technical training , certifications, and other professional designations, to add credentials to your name.

The people, who continue to learn new skills, and become "Generalists" seem to be doing the best, based on my career observations. They are the ones who are the most motivated to achieve success early in life.

Hey there Josiah,

Devotion, hard work, fixing mistakes, helping others. Following company mission statements. Smiling at People. Not scared to volunteer without pay.

Let's dive into the exciting journey of crafting a Success Mindset! If you're eager to taste success at a young age, it's vital to nurture a mindset that's geared towards success. This means adopting a sunny outlook, setting goals that are within your reach, and fostering a mindset that's all about growth. Here's how you can make it happen:

1. Be Positive: A cheerful outlook can be a game-changer when it comes to success. Surround yourself with positivity, keep your spirits high, and always try to find the bright side of every situation.

2. Set Achievable Goals: Make sure your short-term and long-term goals are realistic. Break them down into bite-sized tasks and keep a close eye on your progress. This will keep you on track and fuel your motivation.

3. Grow Constantly: Welcome challenges and see them as stepping stones to growth. Trust in your ability to refine your skills and capabilities through hard work and perseverance.

Now, let's move on to laying a Strong Foundation for Success. This involves investing in your education, health, and social skills. Here's how you can build a sturdy base:

1. Learn More: Spend time acquiring new skills and knowledge. Participate in workshops, enroll in online courses, or join groups that match your interests and career aspirations.

2. Stay Healthy: Your physical and mental health should be your priority. Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and practice stress-busting activities like meditation or yoga.

3. Improve Social Skills: Hone your communication and people skills. This will help you forge strong bonds, work effectively with others, and navigate social situations with ease.

Next, let's talk about Seizing Opportunities and Taking Action. To taste success, you need to grab opportunities and act on them. Here's how you can do it:

1. Network: Build connections with people in your field of interest. Attend networking events, participate in online discussions, and interact with professionals on social media.

2. Intern or Work Part-Time: Get hands-on experience in your chosen field through internships or part-time jobs. This will give you a sneak peek into the industry and enhance your resume.

3. Take Smart Risks: Welcome new challenges and take risks that are well-thought-out. Learn from your missteps and use them as stepping stones to growth.

Lastly, for Long-Term Success, continuous learning and growth are essential. Here's how you can make it happen:

1. Keep Up with Industry Trends: Stay in the loop with the latest industry trends by reading relevant publications, attending conferences, and following thought leaders.

2. Make Time for Personal Growth: Set aside time for self-reflection, goal setting, and self-improvement activities like reading, attending workshops, or joining mentorship programs.

3. Be Adaptable: Embrace change and be ready to tweak your plans and strategies as required. Stay flexible and resilient when faced with obstacles.

To deepen your understanding, here are a few books that offer valuable insights:

1. “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” by Carol Dweck: This book sheds light on the growth mindset and its role in achieving success in various life areas.

2. “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey: This book provides a blueprint for personal and professional growth, focusing on habits like being proactive, setting goals, and staying positive.

3. “The Power of Full Engagement” by Tony Schwartz and Jim Loehr: This book highlights the role of energy management in achieving success and offers strategies to maintain high energy and focus levels.

Lastly, do check out my autobiography for a list of healthy foods. Thanks!

Take care,
James.

Ruben’s Answer

At a young age it certainly takes a good brain to get ahead of the game. Passion is what will keep you moving. If I can summarize it on the top 5 things to focus on, it will be the following:

Clear Goals: Define specific, achievable goals to give your efforts direction and purpose.
Education and Skill Development: Invest in your education and continuously develop relevant skills for your chosen field.
Work Ethic and Discipline: Cultivate a strong work ethic, manage your time effectively, and stay disciplined in your pursuits.
Networking: Build a robust professional network through connections, mentorship, and participation in relevant communities.
Adaptability and Resilience: Be open to change, learn from setbacks, and cultivate resilience to overcome challenges.

Hope this helps. Great job in questioning life, which is one of the first steps in staying ahead of the game.

Hello Josiah,

Success is a broad and beautiful concept, and it can mean different things to different people at different times. As you journey through life, your understanding of success might evolve. Sometimes, it might signify professional accomplishments, while at other times, it could represent the love and support you receive from your family and friends.

One important key to achieving success is to begin with something that ignites your passion, something that you truly love. This will open up numerous opportunities for you. Kim’s Answer

This is a powerful question and I'm so happy you asked! Becoming successful in life can mean a lot of different things to different people. I thought some of these suggestions might help, but of course they may not all be right for you and that's ok! Take care and you are going to do great!!

1. Set clear goals: Identify what you want to achieve in life and set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals to help you get there.

2. Develop a positive mindset: Cultivate a positive attitude towards life and believe in yourself. Surround yourself with positive people who support and encourage you.

3. Work hard: Success requires hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Be willing to put in the effort and time required to achieve your goals.

4. Learn continuously: Keep learning and expanding your knowledge and skills. Attend workshops, seminars, and training programs to enhance your skills and stay up-to-date with the latest trends and developments in your field.

5. Build strong relationships: Develop and maintain strong relationships with people who can help you achieve your goals. Network with professionals in your field and build a strong support system.

6. Take calculated risks: Don't be afraid to take risks, but make sure they are calculated and well thought out. Take calculated risks that align with your goals and values.

7. Stay focused: Stay focused on your goals and avoid distractions that can derail your progress. Stay committed to your goals and keep pushing forward, even when faced with challenges and setbacks.

Remember, success is a journey, not a destination. It takes time, effort, and dedication to achieve your goals. Stay focused, work hard, and believe in yourself, and you will be on your way to achieving success in life.

Juney’s Answer

There are many ways to define success, and many of those would set an individual up for failure if applied directly without regard for the individual's circumstances, foundations & talents.

In addition to that, definitions of success are heavily influenced by our loved ones and peers. Your definition will also change over time.

First and foremost, it's worth considering what success means to you, why you feel the need to be successful, and why you would have to be successful at a young age.

A few terms (far from exhaustive!) that you could reflect on to start assessing your current interpretation of success:

- Healthy
- Happy / Satisfied / Contented
- Free / Agency
- Authentic
- Skilled / Knowledgeable / Talented
- Loved / Respected / Appreciated
- Legacy
- Wealthy
- Famous

With regards to assessing why you feel the need: Are there expectations you're hoping to meet, either your own, or someone else's? Are there examples you're hoping to follow? Is there an outcome you're hoping to achieve that depends on a certain kind of success?

These are all tough questions to answer, and in my experience it takes a lot of self-reflection, conversations with folks you like & don't like, and time, to come to conclusions for yourself. As indicated above, your conclusions will likely change over time as your circumstances, experiences & perspective change.

Good luck!
