What would my day to day look like and what I would study in my day to day If I want to major in equine science?!

Hello! I am a junior in High school and I want to major in equine science to become an equine massage therapist,I was just wondering what exactly are the things I would be doing If I major in science?Would I have to have that degree to become a massage therapist or can I just do that course separately?! I am looking Into UF because It has an amazing program and an amazing equestrian team! Does anybody know of any other college In Fl that has equine related studies? Sorry for all the questions😂Thank you so much!!

Thank you comment icon I know of chiropractors who work on people and livestock. That might be a route to consider. TRAVIS UPCHURCH

Hi Valeria,

Equine massage therapy might be part of some horsey college programs but it doesn't have to be. You'd have to do a deeper search, probably check the courses at each school to find that information. I see that University of Central Florida has several specializations under equine science, one of them being an associates degree in Equine Exercise Physiology. That might be close to what you are looking for or at least be a very good foundation. You can also contact the departments you are considering directly and ask those specific questions.

There are a lot of independent institutions that offer certificates in equine massage, but a lot of them look rather shady, such as online massage programs (how do you learn a hands-on profession online?) or weekend courses.

I would recommend to get your associates (2 years) or bachelors (4 years) in equine science and if you want to tack on a separate massage course from a reputable school, you can do that. That way you'll have a solid foundation and it will give you credibility and set you apart from other applicants. Also, you'd be qualified for a variety of jobs around horses and management.

Please also check with your state what the licensing requirements for equine massage therapists are.

Good luck!
