Rebecca’s Answer

Thank you for your question. This is a good question. Firstly, you have to identify the careers you have interest.
Below are my suggestions :
1. Think about what you have interest, e.g. your hobbies, favourite subjects, etc. and identify the related careers
E.g. If you like music, would you like to be a musician, singer, musical artist, music composer, music producer, etc.
If you have interest in maths, would you like to an engineer, accountant, banker, financial analyst, maths teacher, etc.
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counsellor, your parents, etc.
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to pursue
5. Explore the entry criteria of relevant subjects in colleges
6. Upon graduation, prepare a long term career plan and breakdown into short term milestones. Review the career plan regularly and adjust if necessary
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Daniel’s Answer

I'd recommend thinking about what success looks like for YOU personally in your career. This will typically involve:
- Are you doing a job you enjoy?
- Are you making enough money to pay for the lifestyle you want to live?
- Do you are aspire to be an entrepreneur or reach a certain level or title?
- Do you have a job where you have can balance friends/family/etc. in the way that's right for you?
- Are you helping others or doing work that you find meaning in?

Starting off, you may think it's just about title and money, but it's finding the right balance, lifestyle, and fulfillment for you. Once you have a clear sense of some of the questions above, you can rank them in importance to you. And then you can set general goals for each question.. and you can work towards a career that best meets each of these areas.

Leah’s Answer

Good Afternoon, I would write out your career goals and make a plan. Do some research online in reference to the career. Communicate with others that are working in the field. I have been in Customer Service for over 30 years and my work at Verizon is very critical as I am a 911 SPOC and currently work from home. I have retail Customer Service experience and have been a Customer Service Associate at the Service Desk in Toysrus(now closed), Walmart and Home Depot.
I know college is hard but I would suggest focus on school now and a job will come
Peace and Blessings to you

Lorin’s Answer

Hello Abigail,
I think the number one thing you can do is to remember you can only go so far by yourself.
It was once said, "if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together."

Just like your personal life, surrounding yourself with people who will aid your career and have a invested interest will do the most for your career. Even the most brilliant CEOs and leaders will give credit to those on their team that make them better.

Lorin recommends the following next steps:

Build your network, and no just when you are looking for a job.
Find a mentor who can give you candid feedback

Hello Abigail!

Determining Your Career Path

The main thing to do to achieve your career is to first identify your interests, skills, and values. This will help you determine the right career path that aligns with your goals and aspirations. Once you have a clear understanding of what you want to achieve, you can take the necessary steps to work towards your career objectives.

To achieve your career and goals, you should consider the following steps:

Self-assessment: Reflect on your interests, strengths, and weaknesses. Consider your values and what you want to achieve in your professional life. This will help you identify the type of work environment and job role that would be most suitable for you.

Research: Research various industries, job roles, and companies to gain a better understanding of the job market and the opportunities available. This will also help you identify any skills gaps that you may need to address.

Education and training: Pursue relevant education and training programs to develop the necessary skills and knowledge required for your desired career. This may include obtaining a degree, certification, or taking specialized courses.

Networking: Build relationships with professionals in your chosen field. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and utilize social media platforms to connect with others who share your interests and goals. Networking can help you learn about job opportunities, gain valuable insights, and find mentors to guide you along the way.

Develop a strategic plan: Create a realistic and achievable plan that outlines the steps you need to take to reach your career goals. Be sure to include both short-term and long-term objectives, as well as any necessary milestones to track your progress.

Seek out opportunities: Actively pursue job opportunities, internships, or volunteer work that align with your career goals. Gaining experience in your chosen field is essential for building your resume and developing the skills you need to excel in your career.

Achieving your career goals and aspirations is a multifaceted process that requires a combination of self-awareness, strategic planning, and consistent action. You generally have to be intentional and proactive. Here’s a general guide to help you navigate this journey:

Self-Assessment: Begin by understanding yourself. Identify your strengths, weaknesses, interests, values, and passions. This self-awareness will be crucial in setting career goals that are not only achievable but also fulfilling.

Define Clear Goals: Be specific about what you want to achieve in your career. Break down your long-term goals into short-term objectives. Make sure your goals are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Educational and Skill Development: Depending on your career path, you may need certain qualifications or skills. This could mean formal education, online courses, workshops, reading, or hands-on experience. Continuously upgrading your skills keeps you competitive and relevant in your field.

Networking: Build and maintain professional relationships. Networking can provide you with valuable insights, mentorship, and opportunities that are not publicly advertised. Attend industry conferences, join professional organizations, and engage in online professional communities.

Gain Experience: Whether it’s through internships, volunteering, part-time jobs, or full-time positions, practical experience is invaluable. It helps you understand the realities of your chosen field and develop essential skills.

Find a Mentor: A mentor who is experienced in your field can offer guidance, advice, and support. They can help you navigate challenges and make informed decisions about your career path.

Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with industry trends, advancements, and changes. This knowledge can help you adapt and find new opportunities in your field.

Work-Life Balance: While pursuing your career goals, it’s important to maintain a healthy balance with other aspects of your life. This includes taking care of your physical and mental health, nurturing relationships, and pursuing personal interests.

Flexibility and Adaptability: Be prepared to reassess and adjust your goals as you grow personally and professionally. The ability to adapt to change is a key skill in today’s dynamic work environment.

Persistence and Resilience: There will be challenges and setbacks. Persistence and resilience are crucial in overcoming these obstacles. Learn from failures and keep moving forward.

Self-Promotion: Develop the ability to articulate your achievements and career aspirations. This is important for job interviews, networking, and performance evaluations.

Reflect and Reassess: Regularly reflect on your career path. Are you moving towards your goals? Do your goals still align with your values and interests? This reflection can lead to meaningful adjustments in your career strategy.

Remember, achieving career goals is not a linear path; it requires continuous effort and evolution, and motivation. Stay proactive, be open to learning and new experiences, and most importantly, believe in your ability to succeed!

Be intentional with your days and how you use your time. Realizing that your classes are an investment in your future and the better you do, the more resources (pay) you might be able to realize.

Stay focused on your education &/or put your head down at your first job. Have a goal to always learn and grow. Let supervisors know you want to move up and do more than is expected.

A strong work ethic paired with a good education can help you create a nice life.

Learn What You Need:

Depending on the job you want, you might need certain kinds of education. This could be going to college, learning a trade, or getting special training.
Get Some Experience:

Try things like internships, small jobs, or volunteering in areas that interest you. This helps you understand the job better and is good for your resume.
Build Your Skills:

Figure out the skills you need for your dream job and start working on them. This includes both job-specific skills and general skills like how to work with others and solve problems.
Meet People in the Field:

Talk to people who already work in the job you want. Go to events, join online groups, and don't be shy to ask for advice.
Find a Mentor:

A mentor is someone who knows a lot about the field you're interested in and can guide you with their experience.

Every now and then, think about how far you've come and if your goals need any changes.
Remember, getting to your dream job is a journey that takes time and effort. It's important to enjoy what you're doing and celebrate your successes along the way!

Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Abigail !

In addition to all of the superb advice given here, I would like to remind you that the one single aspect of achieving the career that you really want is Personal Development. Becoming an individual that has a basic comfort and ability to navigate life in all respects is going to give you the ability to take the steps needed for an awesome career.

I mention personal development because although it will help you greatly in your career, a career is not the only facet of life you'll be living. Personal growth will be an asset to you in every area of your life. It will bring out the best in you as a person, not only as a person engaged in a career. The more developed personal growth you have, the more you can inspire and help others. So I would look at both the technical things like a college degree, licensing, good grades, jobs, but what lies underneath is your growth as a person relating to people in many, many different capacities. Strive to be that person that everyone wants to work with . Be adaptable and versatile. You can be a person who makes a commitment.

I hope that this helps and I wish you all the best !

Establishing small, manageable targets can be incredibly beneficial. While it's important to have an ultimate objective, it's equally crucial not to obsess over it. Instead, concentrate on the minor milestones that lead to that big achievement. This approach can help reduce the stress of feeling distant from your ultimate goal, while providing a sense of accomplishment throughout the journey.

Diane’s Answer

Hi Abigail! There are a few key components to being able to construct a successful career.
First of all, you need to ensure that you are doing well while you are finishing up your high school career. If you want to go into a field, like nursing, you need to do well in math and science. Do your research and see what is required to successfully complete the education connected to your career goals.
Secondly, and this is important, will you be able to get a job in your career where you plan to live once you complete your education. I live in eastern North Carolina and there are a lot of people with bachelor degrees flipping burgers at McDonald's because they did not do their labor market research. Do research in the area where you plan on living using a site like Indeed to see what jobs are available and what education requirements are required. This brings me to my 3rd point.
Third, you may not need a bachelor's degree to work in the career that you have selected. You always want a good return on your investment of time and money. Even if someone else is paying for your education, it is your time. Why waste it getting a bachelor's when all you need is an associates degree with the required certifications needed to work in the career?
You will know that you have landed well, when you find yourself saying, "I can't believe I get paid to do this!" That has been my story for most of my life...I retire 1 August.
I wish you all the best Abigail!
