In 9th grade, if you're interested in becoming a designer, there are a few classes that can be helpful. Taking art classes can boost your creativity and understanding of design principles. If available, graphic design classes can teach you digital design skills. Computer science can also be useful for learning coding and technical aspects of design software. Photography classes can enhance your visual storytelling abilities. Communication and presentation skills classes can help you effectively share your design ideas. If possible, consider taking industrial or product design classes to learn about designing physical objects. Remember to explore extracurricular activities and online resources too!

Hello, Ashlynn !
What an exciting and creative interest you have with Design. There are so many classes that I think you will enjoy and that will develop and progress your talent with your design skills ! There's so much to explore and discover about your talents.
In high school, if your high school offers it, I would suggest that you take classes in computer graphics, drawing and sketching, sculpture, mechanical drawing, commercial art and garment construction/sewing. There are probably a lot more design oriented classes, but you can ask your art department for a full list of what they offer.
An important plan if you aim to have a career in design is to take a couple of classes in design all through high school. If you are college and career bound (and even if you are not), join a club or groups and all design activities throughout all years in high school. This will mean much when it comes time to apply to design schools after high school.
By taking various design classes and having experience through extracurriculars you may discover your niche or a couple of them and that will help you decide your favorite form of design or maybe even a couple, that you will like to pursue as a career. If your high school doesn't have a variety of design classes, explore what is available on line. Class Central has some classes at https://www.classcentral.com/subject/graphic-design . Just Creative has some online classes also at https://justcreative.com/best-free-graphic-design-courses-online/ . Explore other websites through an online search and you will most likely come up with a class that you will like.
I hope that this was of help and I wish you well in all you do !

Hello Ashlynn,
Classes to Take for a Career in Design
As a 9th-grade student interested in pursuing a career in design, there are several classes that can provide a strong foundation for your future endeavors. Design is a broad field that encompasses various disciplines such as graphic design, fashion design, interior design, industrial design, and more. While the specific classes may vary based on your area of interest within the design field, there are some fundamental courses that can help you build essential skills and knowledge.
Visual Arts
Taking visual arts classes can be highly beneficial for aspiring designers. These classes often cover drawing, painting, and other forms of artistic expression. Developing strong visual art skills is crucial for many design disciplines as it helps in understanding composition, color theory, and aesthetics.
Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
In today’s digital age, proficiency in computer-aided design software is essential for many design careers. Learning CAD programs can provide you with the technical skills needed to create digital designs and models. This can be particularly relevant for fields such as industrial design and architecture.
Graphic Design
If you are interested in pursuing a career in graphic design, taking classes specifically focused on this discipline is crucial. These courses typically cover topics such as typography, layout design, branding, and digital media. They can help you develop skills in creating visual content for various purposes including marketing materials, publications, and digital platforms.
Fashion Design or Textiles
For those interested in fashion design, taking classes related to fashion or textiles can be valuable. These courses often delve into garment construction, pattern making, textile selection, and fashion history. They provide a solid understanding of the technical and creative aspects of the fashion industry.
Art History
Studying art history can provide valuable insights into the evolution of artistic styles, movements, and influential artists. Understanding the historical context of art and design can enrich your creative perspective and inspire innovative ideas in your own work.
Business or Marketing
In addition to creative skills, having a basic understanding of business or marketing can be advantageous for designers. Courses in these areas can help you grasp essential concepts related to entrepreneurship, branding, market research, and client communication – all of which are valuable for a successful career in design.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the specific classes you should take for a career in design depend on your particular area of interest within the field. However, foundational courses in visual arts, computer-aided design, graphic design, fashion/textiles, art history, and business/marketing can provide a well-rounded preparation for pursuing a career in various design disciplines.
