How do you know if a certain career path is for you?

I’ve been thinking about career paths that I think would fit me, but in reality I really don’t know how to even go about choosing what would fit my personality well.

Priscilla’s Answer

Hey Lisa!

I know it can get fustrating and overwhelming thinking about ALL the different possibilities out there and the opportunities available for you to do. You are on the right path right now! Have you ever considered taking an interest assessment? I always thought I wanted to have a career in helping people, but thats so broad and so many jobs that I could choose. When i took the interest assessment myself, it helped me decide which setting I enjoyed and that made a HUGE difference in narrowing the results. Here is one you can take on CareerOneStop. https://www.careeronestop.org/getmyfuture/toolkit/interest-assessment.aspx

It takes about 5 min and asks you 30 questions on things you like and don't like then gives a personalized list of possible careers, their outlook, education, salary, ect. Its a great first step in determining your interest and what jobs fit well with the things you like. Just not, this assessment is not an end all be all, it is a resource that could help guide you and give you options, something that really helped me and my former students.

Good luck, you got this!🙂

Priscilla recommends the following next steps:

Take interest Assessment
Narrow results to top 3-5
Research top 3 job interests
Breath, you got this!
Apply to the job

Lisa’s Answer

I would recommend that you read What Color is Your Parachute book. I would also consider what hobbies or interests that you have animals, art, communications. I would then try and find volunteer opportunities within that hobby to determine if that is a good fit for you personally. Sometimes there are clubs such as explorers that will give you the opportunity to learn more about that profession. Sometimes you can job shadow for a day to see if that is something you would like. I would encourage you to work with your guidance counselors at your school as they are wonderful resources. Good Luck to you. Lisa

Lisa recommends the following next steps:

Read What Color is your Parachute book
Try to find volunteer opportunities within an area that interests you.
Try and job shadow, or find clubs that will allow you to learn more about that profession.
Check with your school guidance counselor for suggestions and opportunities.

Simeon’s Answer

In general, I would go to the department of labor's website (https://www.dol.gov/) and see which fields are growing quickly these days. If you're drawing a blank on what you'd like to do, see if any of the fast growing fields call out to you. This will give you a lot more structure than trying to get a vague sense of your passions and trying to brainstorm a way to turn it into money. Most people don't have a passion that they are aware of right away. Also, passions tend to change from season to season. Lastly, look at videos on YouTube of people in their careers talking about what they love and hate. See if any of their descriptions sound like a good fit for you. It's just as important to figure out if you can deal with the downsides of a job as it is to figure out what you'd love about a job.

Jennifer’s Answer

First thing I would do is figure out what you like to do? What are your favorite subjects in school? Lists always help me. Then what I would do is go on mynextmove.org and look through possible careers that align with what your interests are. Many people think you need to have it all figured out before college, but reality is, many have multiple career changes or do many different things during their career. Don't feel discouraged that you don't know yet. Explore, google, ask other adults around you what they do. Go on job shadows if your school does that

Jennifer recommends the following next steps:

List of interests and favorite classes
www.mynextmove.org
Talk to other adults around you
Job Shadowing

Subhanshi’s Answer

Well career is something which is given so much importance because come on its how you lead your life tough who said their is only one chance or choice for a career. Anyone can be anything but how is you ask well I would only one thing try even if you think you can't because you are not best in it,every try definitely would confirm one thing if not anything, is that specific stuff is not for you, which is fine. Most importantly remember their is no hurry explore as much as you want before finding what you love to do and yeah nothing is small or big.😄

Subhanshi recommends the following next steps:

First come up with everything you find interesting then make a to do list and just try and rest you will do on your own
All the best , its gonna be a great journey And remember to have loads of fun.
