In college, what is the best way to meet new people with the same interest?

In a couple of months I am going to start my freshman year of college and I am sometimes shy when it comes to meeting new people. So what is your best advice in getting to meet new people and managing my shyness?

Thank you comment icon Hi Emilia, This is a really good question. I think what you can do is to join some clubs that you are interested in. That way you would have a common interest to start out the conversation. Once you are in a class, I believe you can find people who have a common interest as you. I can tell you is that don't be afraid to talk to people first because everyone is just the same as you. They are also new to the school and people. Before you head to college, I think you can also join school group chat to meet people first. This way you can get resources and know people. From my older sister's experience, get to know people is really important in college life. It would make your life much easier when you encounter problems. Hope you can find your group and not afraid of meeting people. :) Joy Joy

Rosalie’s Answer

Hello Emilia,

One of the ways I found helpful was to look for student organizations to join. Circle K was a student group centered around volunteering and was a fabulous way for me to get out of my comfort zone, make new friends and be active in the community. Depending on your college there may be student resources to locate a variety of interest groups and extra curricular activities that may also help you expand your circle. Many colleges also host special events for their students which give opportunities to network as well. I would highly suggest reaching out to student services to get an idea of what resources are available to you.

Best of luck,

Hi Emilia,

I think the best way to find people with similar interests as you is to join clubs or events being held at your school can be a good step in finding those people. Definitely helped me to find friends that way!

Best,

Get involved into activities that you're interested in and talk to other people in your classes. Don't be afraid to say no but also don't be afraid to say yes!

I am also shy at warming up to new people! But one thing I have learnt in life is never to force anything. Have you ever met a friend in the most random way possible, you missed a seat in a bus and someone is like, can we share this space? You carrying heavy luggage and just a random person offers to help. Even in college, you will naturally gel with this person who will share interests with you. You will visit an art parlour and just someone is there sinking in a piece of item and they will be like...out of this world, don't you think? Let nature amazing match have it's way. Be natural, be real!
