James’s Answer
Respectfulness demonstrates character. Those with character are people the coach or higher ups can trust. Develop your character, integrity, excellence, and service to others and you will be great. Many football players are praised for their physical prowess, few are ever praised because they are gentlemen behind closed doors. You will be given much power, fame, and influence. These three things destroy those who have poor character. Those without character are not respected.

Dear Anthony,
I think it's terrific that you want to be an NFL player! To be in the NFL certainly requires athletic skills, but I want you to know that being respectful is important in whatever profession you decide to pursue. Sometimes this is difficult when other people are not respectful. But for you...it's important to remain respectful in your career. When you are respectful, it shows that you are mature and professional and that you take the job seriously.
I wish you all the best Anthony. Thanks for asking a thoughtful question.
Best,
Melanie

Dear Anthony,
The Crucial Role of Respect in an NFL Player's Career
Cultivating a Positive Image
Embodying respect is a fundamental attribute for any NFL player, as it paves the way for a positive image both inside and outside the game. Displaying respectful conduct towards coaches, fellow players, rivals, and referees reflects maturity, professionalism, and a robust work ethic - traits that NFL teams highly value in their players.
Fostering Robust Relationships
Moreover, respect is the cornerstone of building robust relationships with your teammates and coaches. By extending respect, you can foster a positive and supportive team atmosphere that promotes teamwork, open communication, and trust. These bonds are crucial for football success, as they help to create a united and efficient team working collectively towards their objectives.
Honing Leadership Abilities
Respect is a vital element of leadership, and by exhibiting respectful behavior, you can enhance your leadership abilities. NFL players are often viewed as community leaders, and by radiating respect, you can inspire and encourage others to emulate your actions. This is a fundamental skill for any NFL player, as it can help to generate a positive influence both on and off the field.
Boosting On-Field Performance
Lastly, displaying respect can also boost your performance on the field. By showing respect for the game, your adversaries, and yourself, you can maintain a positive mindset and stay focused on your goals. This can aid in reducing stress, augmenting concentration, and enhancing motivation, all of which can lead to improved performance during matches.
To sum up, embodying respect is vital for any NFL player aiming for a successful career. It aids in cultivating a positive image, fostering robust relationships, honing leadership abilities, and boosting on-field performance. By exhibiting respectful behavior, you can evolve into a role model for others and make a positive impact both on and off the field.

Hello Anthony,
Simply put, coaches want someone who is coachable. Showing that you have character and integrity and are respectful is a direct link to coachability.
If a coach is interested in your athletic ability, but find you have no respect for authority (parents, teachers, coaches, administrative staff), they cannot trust that you will respect them. If you cannot respect them, how will you respect what they are teaching you on the playing field? Be respectful!
