Hi!

I hope all is well! In my experience throughout college, accounting was seen as the major that is dry, dull, and boring. However, this is certainly not the case. Accounting just like any major has many attributes of being enjoyable. For instance, accounting can unlock many opportunities whether that is conducting external and internal audits or reviewing organizational processes. The range in the type of work can allow you to find specifically within the field of business what works best for you based on interests and lifestyle. Additionally, if you enjoy problem-solving, math and analytics, and helping others financially, accounting is the right field to be in. Accounting provides the ability to enjoy a future with high demand, as there continues to be a need not just for CPAs but also for problem-solvers. There will always be times in your career where something may be enjoyable or it may not be; however, having accounting as a major or even a minor can give you that ability to pivot from one area to another. With all of this said, you can definitely account on accounting to be fun, enjoyable, and life-changing. Good luck with your career journey and please reach out if you have any questions.

Thank you,
Dwight

Hi there!

Great question. I asked myself the same question when I was trying to decide my major in college and my future career interests. There are a ton of different career options within accounting. I work in consulting, so not traditional audit, so the accounting I work with is maybe different from the typical accounting you might be thinking of. Here is what I find to be enjoyable about it and why:

1. It is satisfying - A lot of people go into because they enjoy working with numbers. There are many right and wrong ways to do things, so a lot of people enjoy being able to get to the "right" answer.
2. Opportunity to help people - Accounting led me to my current job. I get to help clients solve problems and avoid issues which in turn, helps them to be more successful. It is enjoyable to be able to make an impact.
3. Opened the door to many opportunities - Majoring in accounting will open the door to not only audit careers, but also tax, compliance, consulting, finance, management, etc. The possibilities are endless and it really is the language of business!

It's a great career option!

Dear CVOH,

Tackling Intricate Challenges

Accounting is a field that often presents intricate challenges, and for many professionals, overcoming these challenges is a rewarding experience. It requires a keen analytical mind and adept problem-solving skills. Accountants are tasked with dissecting financial data, pinpointing issues, and crafting solutions to these complex problems. The thrill of this process, especially when the solutions significantly bolster an organization's financial well-being, can be incredibly satisfying.

Embracing Lifelong Learning

Accounting also offers the chance for continuous learning, a feature that many find appealing. The landscape of accounting is in constant flux, with fresh laws, regulations, and technologies emerging regularly. This necessitates that accountants adopt the mindset of lifelong learners, persistently refining their skills and knowledge to remain relevant in the field. This perpetual journey of learning often brings enjoyment and a sense of professional accomplishment.

Creating Positive Impact

The role of accounting in an organization's success is pivotal, and it provides accountants with the chance to create a tangible impact. By delivering precise financial data and insights, accountants empower organizations to make informed decisions that can spur growth, profitability, and long-term success. Accountants can also aid organizations in enhancing efficiency, minimizing waste, and improving their overall financial health. The knowledge that their work directly influences an organization's success can be a strong driving force for many accounting professionals.

Fostering Collaboration and Teamwork

Contrary to common perception, accounting is not a solitary profession. It involves substantial collaboration and teamwork. Accountants frequently collaborate with other professionals, such as auditors, financial analysts, and tax specialists, to deliver comprehensive financial services to clients or organizations. This collaborative environment can be highly gratifying for those who thrive in team settings.

Seizing Entrepreneurial Opportunities

Accounting also lays a solid foundation for entrepreneurship. Many successful entrepreneurs have an accounting background as it equips them with robust financial management and analysis skills. Accountants who venture into entrepreneurship can relish the autonomy and flexibility of being their own boss while utilizing their skills and expertise to assist clients or customers in achieving their financial objectives.

In conclusion, accounting offers numerous enjoyable facets for professionals who have a passion for finance, problem-solving, and continuous learning. From tackling intricate challenges to creating a positive impact, accounting presents a plethora of opportunities for personal and professional development.

May God bless you!
James Constantine Frangos.

There are many aspects that I find enjoyable. I enjoy working with people. You will be exposed to different cultures and it give you an opportunity to learn about others. Team work. Working in a team to achieve a common goal and when we are successful the celebrations of the wins.

Another aspect is the work. Finding ways to give management better insight into the business. Using the tools to create better reporting and visuals that help management to make better business decisions. This is where you will be challenged to think outside the box.

Laura’s Answer

This is a great question! I am a tax accountant, which for most people sounds like a cringe-worthy career choice. However, I have found work with tax and accounting has just the right amount of challenge to keep me engaged while also allowing me to learn and grow.

A couple of my favorite things about working in accounting include:
1. Helping others - you might not think that you are helping someone while doing a tax return, but you are providing a service that the individual is not able or do not have time to do on their own. Plus, when you get to answer a difficult question, it is an unbeatable feeling.

2. The challenge/ever-changing nature of accounting - I worked in a career that was relatively stagnant prior to finding accounting. I answered the same questions, saw the same problems every single day. While the simplicity of sameness is good for a time, it was not enough to keep me engaged. Having difficult problems to solve and different issues to address every single day is exciting and keeps you interested in the work you are doing. Not to mention that you can learn something new with each challenge.

3. The details - you don't have to be a detail-oriented person to be an accountant, but it certainly helps. Being detail oriented by nature, it is the best when you can find that one piece of information that solves a problem.

4. The people - I may have put this last, but it is no less important than the prior three reasons. Being surrounded by a good team that supports one another through good and bad will make even the difficult days worthwhile.

Connor’s Answer

Hello,

Believe it or not, accounting can be a truly exciting field. It's not just about juggling numbers all day, it's so much more. In accounting, you're challenged to think critically about how to categorize numbers. Then, you gather all the company's data and shape it into a clear picture of the company's financial health. Plus, there's the added thrill of navigating the world of taxes.

What I find most rewarding is tackling tough problems. Sure, they can be a bit stressful at first, but the sense of accomplishment and pride you feel when you find the solution is unbeatable. I have a real passion for numbers and data. To me, they're like a fascinating story that reveals what's really happening in a business. As accountants, we get to interpret these numerical stories and use them to make informed decisions about how to boost the business or what changes might be needed for future success.

Thanks,
