What should I do if I'm not sure what I want to major in?

I'm not sure if I want to major in bioenvironmental sciences or forensic sciences or even something else. Is it best to go undeclared? Or should I double major or pick one to minor in and one to major in?

Rachel’s Answer

I just recently graduated from college about a year ago, and the first thing I did was major in something I felt I had a knack in. As I progressed in this major, I felt like I wasn't doing enough for people and wouldn't enjoy my career if I didn't look for something that was more focused on the welfare of others. I went through the school majors, putting sticky notes in every section of the book, until I found something that sounded most like what I would be interested in. I continued in that major and completed both majors in four years.

The great thing about college is that you have SO many options to find the perfect match for you. They will usually have fairs twice a year that allow you to search everything the school has to offer. Remember, just because you like it, doesn't mean you have to major in it. You can first try out a group or a single class to see if that's where you feel comfortable and willing to grow. For example, I was involved in theater from the time I was 6 through the month before I left for college. I knew I didn't want to major in theater so I looked at groups and found out that I wanted to be in an a cappella group through all of college. This allowed me to do something I loved as a hobby while still working towards a major that would be something I loved as a career.

Taylor’s Answer

I went into college not knowing what I wanted to major in so I started off as Undecided. I took a lot of different classes of all of the areas that I was interested in which I actually really enjoyed. The good thing about the classes I was enrolled in counted as part of my general studies courses so I wasn't losing any credits at the same time that I was getting exposure to different areas and opportunities for future growth. This lead me to my ultimate decision of what sparked my interest most. It also helped me decide on the areas I wasn't interested in after all.

After a year of being Undecided I declared my major in Sociology-Criminology. I continued my 4 years to finish off my degree with this major. The good thing about college is that they offer the opportunity to so many different courses and degrees. If you decide on a major early and end up switching it that is OK too. I would recommend exploring all of the areas that interest you the most and going from there to see what you end up enjoying the most.
