I'm in the 11th grade and I've already started exploring my future career, what are some skills I need to be developing in graphic designing based on my passions and interests?

At school, during my freshmen year, I was starting to get interested in visual arts and designing my own things. During the middle of the year, an art academy came to visit my school during career day, I saw many things that school had to offer referring to my career that I want to pursue. Then, in the middle of February, I got to visit the campus and check out the different fields, like the music production, visual art and many other fields, that were interesting. I've heard of different other art schools in the Bay Area, that I want to check out also, like Cogswell College and California College of the Arts. What are some more helpful tips for me in the near future? What are some other things I can do in the graphic design field? #graphicdesign #art #fine-art #digital-art #design #visual-arts

In graphic design you need to know all the art indesign basics such as color theory, and elements and principles of art. In addition, graphics designers need to know Abobe Photoshop, Indesign, and Illustrator. I think learning how to use the Adobe software is very important

Hi Rose! I'm a graphic designer and love my job! It's great that you are planning ahead for your career. If you're looking into schools with design programs I'd suggest starting your own portfolio sooner rather than later. Many programs require a portfolio with the application, but even if you apply places that don't require it you can only benefit from having one! The sooner you start learning how to use design software (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) the easier it will be for you when you start taking design classes. Start some side projects that push you to learn things you don't already know. The software can be overwhelming at first, but there are plenty of tutorials on the internet. Additionally, I'd recommend you start following designers on social media to not only keep up with what is new, but to learn which styles you prefer and which area of design you'd like to work in. Once you are in school, it's never too early to apply for internships! I found that my skills grew the most during my internships, so try to work them in (especially in your summers if you aren't taking classes).

Hope that helps and good luck in school!

I'd also chip in that there are a lot of graphic design related courses on SkillShare, which is a subscription based web service for people to teach themselves skills with high quality video explainers. They have a lot of deals and discounts, so I'd keep my eye out for some of those as well.
