Dr. Tulsi’s Answer

Hey there,
In the labyrinth of life, determination emerges as our steadfast companion, guiding us through the twists and turns of our journey. With each obstacle we encounter and every setback we face, it is the determination that propels us forward, igniting the spark of resilience within our souls. As we navigate the complexities of existence, let us unravel the mysteries of unwavering resolve and uncover the keys to overcoming challenges with unwavering strength.

Let's dive into some practical steps to cultivate determination and overcome challenges, especially in the context of women in STEM:

Clarify Your Goals:
Start by defining what success looks like for you. Whether it's excelling in your field, breaking new ground with your research, or inspiring the next generation of STEM leaders, having clear goals will fuel your determination and keep you focused when faced with obstacles.

Find Your Why:
Take some time to reflect on why you're passionate about your work in STEM. What drives you? What impact do you hope to make? Connecting with your deeper purpose will give you the motivation and resilience to push through setbacks and stay committed to your goals.

Build a Support System:
Surround yourself with mentors, colleagues, and friends who believe in you and your abilities. Seek out role models who have overcome similar challenges in their STEM careers and learn from their experiences. Having a supportive network can provide valuable guidance, encouragement, and perspective when you need it most.

Develop Resilience:
Inevitably, you'll encounter setbacks and obstacles along the way. Instead of seeing them as failures, view them as opportunities for growth and learning. Cultivate resilience by reframing challenges as temporary roadblocks and focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on problems.

Practice Self-Compassion:
Be kind to yourself, especially during difficult times. Recognize that setbacks and failures are a natural part of any journey, and they don't define your worth or capabilities. Treat yourself with the same empathy and understanding that you would offer to a friend facing similar challenges.

Stay Flexible:
In the ever-evolving field of STEM, adaptability is key. Be open to new opportunities, experiences, and ways of thinking. Embrace change as a chance to learn and grow, rather than fearing it as a threat to your progress.

Celebrate Your Progress:
Take time to acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Each step forward, whether it's mastering a new skill, completing a challenging project, or overcoming a personal hurdle, is worth recognizing and celebrating. By acknowledging your progress, you'll stay motivated and inspired to keep moving forward.

Pay It Forward:
As you navigate your journey in STEM, remember to lift others up along the way. Mentorship and support from more experienced professionals can make a world of difference for women entering the field. By paying it forward and supporting the next generation of STEM leaders, you'll create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.

By following these steps and staying true to yourself and your passions, you'll build the resilience and determination needed to overcome any challenge that comes your way in the world of STEM. Remember, you're capable of achieving incredible things, and the world needs your unique perspective and contributions now more than ever.

Hope this helps! and good luck :)

Hello Ruth,

This is a very good question that will strongly help you develop yourself in life and overcome many challenges. Let us first agree that determination is a skill, and any skill needs to be equipped with knowledge and practice. In addition to Dr. Tulsi's response above which I strongly agree with, I would also encourage you to be true to yourself - knowing yourself and be rooted to your principles and values will set a solid ground for you.

If you come across any challenge which is expected as part of life, reminding yourself of why you have started and you are focusing on in line with your values will strongly help you to overcome various challenges. It as well requires patience and discipline.

Always remember that skills are sharpened by practice, you don't need and even you can't master it from the first time. Learn from each step and celebrate any small progress you make in this journey.

All the very best
Raya

Great question Ruth! Challenges are to be expected in career and life. If we keep the mindset that Challenges lead to > Growth, it fuels determination and resiliency.

To be and stay determined, I keep these in mind:

Believe in yourself - even when others may not
Keep your eye on the goal - it will help you through the challenges and setbacks that will arise
Build a support system - people can be there to listen and cheer you on
Be committed to learning and doing the work - even when you are tired and feel like giving up...enjoy the journey
Take care of yourself - rest, eat well, exercise, relax

I hope my thoughts are helpful to you. Good luck!

Great question Ruth! Being determined and overcoming challenges are two areas that will continue to develop as you grow and learn more throughout your career. There are tons of ways you can work towards being more determined. The first step is to take an inventory of where you are currently and where you want to be. You can do this by making a list of all of the areas that you want work on or items you want to work towards, and then make a list of where you currently are in relation to those. From here, you can work to make goals based off of where you find gaps in your skills and knowledge. Making goals like this will keep you on track and help you to determine the actual steps you can take to get there. When you are making goals, make sure they are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, repeatable and time bound).

Once you have your goals set, take steps each day to work towards your goals. Some days this will come easy, others it may be hard. But always try to do something each day that keeps you on track for achieving your goals. One way to ensure you stay on track is to share your goals with others. It is important to do this as it makes the goals more real to you and helps others to keep you accountable by asking how you are doing and if you need help. If you achieve one of your goals, don't forget to celebrate and share your achievement! Tell others how you got to your goal, and treat yourself for getting there.

When it comes to overcoming challenges, always step back and look at all the ways the problem can be solved. Try not to focus on the negative aspects of the challenge, instead, figure out how it can be solved and move forward. Try to keep your emotions out of it and do what is best to solve the issue at hand. Challenges happen and they are not bad, they help us to get better and learn something new.

Good luck in all you do and I hope that your career is off to a great start!
