Oladimeji’s Answer

Embarking on a job as a youngster can be a thrilling journey! Start off by delving into your passions and talents. Seek out chances such as looking after pets, doing yard chores, or assisting neighbors with their tasks. You could also think about starting your own business like selling crafts you've made yourself or providing tutoring services. Keep in mind, your excitement and dedication to hard work can pave the way to rewarding experiences, no matter your age!

Shiane’s Answer

Hi Linda! Besides certain job age requirements, I think it's great to start working and see the world a little earlier! If I were you, I would look at places hiring near you where you fit the age requirements. Think about what kind of job you would want to have, what pay you are ok with, and whether you could see yourself there long term. If all of those things are in line, you should apply! the worst that happens is it doesn't work out and you look for the next advice.

Hello, Linda !

I applaud you for wanting to work and reaching out to us for advice !

It's going to depend on your age and your State if you live in the U.S. One thing that you can do if you are 14 years old or older is to obtain working papers at your school. If you are under age 14 than you'll most likely have to wait for working papers in your State. The working papers would allow you to work for a company.

If you don't want to or can't work for a company just yet, consider things such as babysitting, lawn and garden maintenance, housecleaning, animal caretaker, and snow shoveling if you live in an area where it snows. Also, think about having tag sales or a garage sale and ask your parent if there are things you can sell. Your family will give you any items that they no longer want and you can have these sales every so often for extra money.

Opportunities for children in employment vary from town to town, city to city. Visit your local library and ask what programs there are for your age group and also see about any Summer Youth Employment Program in your area. If nothing seems to be available, consider going to a themed summer camp at which you can gain experience and perhaps some skills that you can bring to a job you like.

You can put notices on bulletin boards at places you attend to offer the housecleaning and babysitting services. Also go online and do a search for your age group's employment opportunities. Read some notices on employment websites and see what the age requirements are. Right now, your age does matter but it won't matter for too much longer. In the meantime, freelance and come up with what you'd like to do and things pertinent to where you live. It's great to start obtaining experience now.

If you live near a rural area, visit some farms to see if they are hiring anyone for handy work or animal grooming and feeding/watering. You just never know, so it pays to seek these opportunities in person because not all job opportunities are on the internet. Also check with your school about any employment opportunities or programs for your age group that teachers or staff may know about. Seeking employment this way will develop your presentational skills and open up possibilities for work.

I hope that this was helpful and I wish you all the best on that first job !
