Are there any career fields that I can explore that blend design/art and engineering?

I am a senior in high school, and I was recently accepted to Stanford University. I am interested in Civil Engineering, but I recently took a digital foundations class at Skidmore College, which made me interested in Graphic Design. I want to explore majors and career fields that blend both of my interest. #engineering #design #architecture

Some of the best Interactive Designers do both the visual design and engineering. If you have an idea, you can really get it right if you implement it yourself. While many visual designers share their intent with mockups or Flash prototypes, doing the actual coding work yourself gives you another palette to work with.

Also, many game designers can also do some coding, in order to test out theories and interactions.

Two that come to mind are Architectural Engineering (which I don't know much about) and User Interface (UX) design.

I would suggest have a look at the role of the 3D artists and video editors that create architectural visualisations.

This could combine the graphic design element and engineering nicely.

Hello Makaila!

Careers That Blend Design/Art and Engineering

As a high school senior who has been accepted into Stanford University and is interested in both Civil Engineering and Graphic Design, you might be curious about career fields that blend both of these interests. Below are a few examples of such careers that have a strong connection to both design/art and engineering.

Architecture and Urban Planning: This field combines the creative aspect of design with the practical knowledge of engineering to design and plan cities, buildings, and public spaces. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the American Planning Association (APA) are authoritative references for this field. The AIA focuses on advocating for the value of architecture and providing resources for architects, while the APA is dedicated to advancing the art, science, and practice of planning. Both organizations offer valuable information and support for students pursuing careers in architecture and urban planning.

Industrial Design: Industrial design is a field that combines art, design, and engineering to create functional and aesthetically pleasing products. This career path involves working with materials, technology, and user-experience to develop innovative solutions for various industries. The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) is an authoritative reference for this field, providing resources, networking opportunities, and recognition for industrial designers.

Product Design: Similar to industrial design, product design is a field that integrates design, art, and engineering to create functional and visually appealing products. This career path often involves working with various materials, technologies, and user-experience to develop innovative solutions for a wide range of industries. The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) is also a valuable resource for students interested in product design.

Engineering and Graphic Design: This combination of engineering and graphic design can be found in fields like user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design, where professionals create visually appealing and functional digital interfaces for websites and software. The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the User Experience Professionals Association (UXPA) are authoritative references for this field, providing resources, networking opportunities, and professional development for UI/UX designers.

Interaction Design: Interaction design is a field that combines design, art, and engineering to create seamless and enjoyable user experiences for digital products and services. This career path often involves working with various technologies and user-experience principles to create innovative solutions for a wide range of industries. The Interaction Design Foundation (IDF) is an authoritative reference for this field, offering a wide range of resources, courses, and networking opportunities for interaction designers.

In conclusion, there are various career fields that blend design/art and engineering, such as architecture and urban planning, industrial design, product design, engineering and graphic design, and interaction design. By exploring these fields and engaging with authoritative references like the American Institute of Architects, the American Planning Association, the Industrial Designers Society of America, the Association for Computing Machinery, the User Experience Professionals Association, and the Interaction Design Foundation, you can gain valuable insights and resources to help you pursue a career that combines your interests in Civil Engineering and Graphic Design.
