1. Consistent Practice: Dedicate regular time to practice your art skills. Set aside specific hours each day or week to focus solely on creating art. Consistency is key to building muscle memory and developing your artistic abilities.

2. Focus on Fundamentals: Mastering the fundamentals is crucial for any artist. Continuously work on areas such as anatomy, perspective, composition, color theory, and lighting. Strengthening these foundational skills will enhance your overall artistic abilities.

3. Break Down Complex Skills: If you find certain skills challenging, break them down into smaller, manageable parts. For example, if you struggle with anatomy, focus on studying and practicing one body part at a time. Gradually build your knowledge and skills in a step-by-step manner.

4. Seek Constructive Feedback: Share your artwork with fellow artists, mentors, or online art communities to receive constructive feedback. Feedback can help you identify areas for improvement and provide insights from different perspectives.

5. Analyze and Study Artwork: Study the work of artists you admire. Analyze their techniques, compositions, use of color, and overall style. Try to understand their thought process and incorporate elements that resonate with you into your own work.

6. Experiment with Different Mediums and Styles: Explore different art mediums and styles to expand your artistic range. Experimenting with new techniques and materials can help you discover new approaches and develop a unique artistic voice.

7. Take Art Classes or Workshops: Consider enrolling in art classes or workshops, either in-person or online. These structured learning environments can provide guidance, feedback, and opportunities to learn from experienced instructors and fellow artists.

8. Embrace Failure and Learn from Mistakes: Don't be afraid to make mistakes or produce artwork that falls short of your expectations. Failure is a natural part of the learning process. Embrace it, learn from it, and use it as motivation to improve.

9. Study from Life: Practice drawing from observation by studying real-life objects, people, and environments. This will help you develop your observational skills, improve accuracy, and enhance your understanding of form, light, and shadow.

10. Stay Inspired and Motivated: Surround yourself with art that inspires you. Explore different art forms, visit galleries, attend art events, and engage with the art community. Stay motivated by setting goals, participating in art challenges, and celebrating your progress along the way.

Remember, improving your art skills is a journey, and it takes time and dedication. Be patient with yourself, enjoy the process, and celebrate the small victories. With consistent practice and a growth mindset, you will continue to progress and develop as an artist.

Jeff’s Answer

Hello Pearl, I completely understand your feelings. It's common to question our progress, but remember, it has been said that it takes over 10,000 hours to become a master at anything. Consistency, concentration, and perseverance are crucial. It's beneficial (and fun) to revisit your past works, comparing them with your current pieces. This comparison will not only motivate you but also allow you to refine older pieces with the new skills you've acquired. You're undoubtedly on the right path; your dedication to studying aspects related to your primary art form is evident.

Don't be discouraged, continue your journey. Many artists I am learning from say that they spend approximately 80% of their time studying, practicing, and honing their skills, while only 20% is spent on the actual creation of artwork. This principle applies to all art forms. There's no real shortcut to mastery, but if you're feeling overwhelmed, you might want to consider simplifying your focus?

For instance, one artist I know spent two years exclusively painting beach scenes and grasses, capturing the varying moods of different times and seasons. This practice is reminiscent of Monet's haystacks series, where he painted the same subject at the same time each day for an extended period.

Also, remember that taking a brief hiatus can sometimes stimulate creativity. Set your "brushes" aside for a while and immerse yourself in the works of the masters. Alternatively, grab a pencil and simply observe a subject.

Keep your spirits high and continue creating. Good luck, Pearl!

Akerke’s Answer

Hello Pearl 🤗
You may be very capable at drawing, but honing your technique requires diligent practice rather than sheer talent.  Luckily, there are many ways to help you improve your artistic skills.
Keep practicing and enjoy drawing for the rest of your life.  Drawing cannot be learned in one day;  Moreover, your skills will constantly develop.  If you read about artists, you will see that those who created over many years often changed their style as time passed;  this was influenced by new knowledge, the desire to push the boundaries of one’s creativity, the desire for change and improvement.  In other words, improving your drawing skills (no matter how good they already are) is a lifelong process that never stops.  It is based on diligence and constancy;  if you really love drawing, you can easily show off both.
Drawing is not a competitive sport.  You draw to express something important to you, and you do it in your own way and in your own time. Don't compare your drawings to the works of famous artists.  Remember that they are professionals and have been doing this their whole lives.  However, you can be inspired by their creativity if you are motivated by the thought that one day you will learn to draw just as well.
Experiment with different types and textures of paper.  The pencil fits on Bristol board very differently than on cotton paper.  Choose a texture that you like best or that best suits your design. To see your progress in drawing, take one of your old drawings and repeat it.  If you don't see noticeable improvements, think about what exactly you need to improve.
You can repeat this several times. Don't work with the same technique all the time;  a good and receptive artist will happily try any materials that fall into his hands.  The basics of drawing remain the same - for example, the laws of linear perspective apply the same whether you draw with a pencil or charcoal.

Jerome’s Answer

In my experience, local libraries offer free community workshops that are taught by people who want to give back. You may want to look and see if there is anything that aligns with the skills you are looking to develop. Associations may also offer mentors or personal development opportunities. Many will be willing to support a student looking to enter the space.

I think there with a couple of searches, you will find ways to improve your craft.

Andres Isaac’s Answer

Hey Pearl! So, after 25 years of doodling and designing characters, here's the scoop: speed? It's like fine wine - it comes with age. Forget about racing to the finish line; focus on making your art sing. You know how some folks think college graduation means the end of cramming? Ha! It's just the opening credits. I'm on a perpetual learning rollercoaster, always picking up new tricks and asking myself, "Can I sneak this into my next masterpiece?" Speedy learning's cool, but let's be real - quality is the main act. And hey, I dish out advice to aspiring artists too, so take it from this seasoned animation veteran: slow and steady wins the creativity race.

Joel’s Answer

Boost your artistic prowess swiftly by segmenting your learning journey into manageable portions. If your aspiration is to master the artistry of creating realistic pieces, then delve into the study of perspective in art right from the start. This crucial element, often overlooked in abstract art, is the key to unlocking your potential. By mastering this aspect and maintaining consistent practice, you'll surprise yourself with your own progress. Besides using resources like books, online courses, or workshops, heed the advice of numerous artists I've spoken to; make it a habit to create something EVERY day. This daily commitment to your craft is a surefire way to improve.

Joel recommends the following next steps:

Try different media; do some drawing if that is your strong point but occasssionally go outside of that area; try sculpture with clay or even found objects.
Try drawing or painting your feelings; art as a sort of therapy or journal.
