Hi there! There are some great responses to this question so I’ll share one idea on what it takes to be successful in one’s career.
In my experience, there’s often many people who have performed in your career that you can leverage as a resource. Whether it’s someone in your career or a person you respect and look up to, my advice would be to find a mentor with proven success who can guide you and support you. Many people are willing to give back, it just takes asking to make it happen!

I would strongly encourage you to cultivate a sense of curiosity at the beginning of your career and absorb as much knowledge as you can. This will assist you in establishing a solid foundation and a network of connections that will undoubtedly prove beneficial in surprising ways later in life. Drawing from my own experiences, I found it extremely helpful to ask a multitude of questions, jot down notes, and delve into topics or subjects that initially seemed challenging to comprehend. To put it simply, we are all perpetual learners in this world, and as long as you demonstrate dedication, the right individuals will acknowledge it. I trust this advice will be of value to you!

Thank you for your question. How do you define what successful is? Career achievements, make a lot of money, work life balance, find a job you enjoy, etc? I think the most important is to find a career you have interest.
Below are my suggestions:
1. Think about what you have interest, eg your hobbies, favourite subjects, etc
Eg if you like music, would you like to be a musician, singer, musical artist, music composer, music producer, etc
If you have interest in maths, would you like to be an accountant, engineer, banker, financial analyst, maths teacher, etc
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counselor, your parents, etc
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to pursue
5. Explore the entry criteria of relevant subjects in colleges
6. Upon graduation, prepare a career development plan and breakdown into short term milestones. Review it regularly and adjust if necessary

Success is subjective and looks different for everyone. It can be the salary you want to make or experiences you want to have professionally or something else.
Early in your career, you want to better understand your strengths and interests. Understand with each job you have — does it allow you to develop your strengths and interests? If no, it should help you start to get clarity around the type of job(s) you want to do. Think about the experiences you want to have during your career. Early on it may be simple — you want to master your current role. As you get more experience under your belt, you’ll get a better sense for things beyond this you might want to experience—leading people, traveling/not traveling, teaming with others, working by yourself, etc.
Give yourself time periodically to reflect on what “success” looks like for you. Is success accomplishment? Income? Things you’re able to afford? Contributions you make (during work, because of work, or outside of work, etc.)? This will change over time.
Know that success is within you (and you alone) always. Don’t look to others to set the bar for what success looks like.

**Clarify professional success- Talk to your manager and figure out what success looks like in your current position
**Exceed expectations- Set the bar high for yourself and strive to stand out. This doesn't mean that you need to prioritize work over everything else, but rather, find a strategy that suits you and adhere to it.
**Lead with passion- Inspire and uplift those around you. Make your voice heard in meetings and maintain a positive attitude. This will not only earn you respect among your colleagues but also stand out to upper management
