Hi Doug
Great question and one that everyone in the tech industry has to deal with. My advice would be to NOT dive too deep into any particular area until you know that it's going to be important to you. I would rather suggest that you need to know a little about a lot of different things and then when you can see more demand for skills in one or two of these things, only then do you invest the time to learn more about them.
The second recommendation is to have good foundational knowledge and skills. If you can code in 1 language then picking up a different one is much less work. If you understand the basics of networking, it's easier to pick up a new network technology and so on. So building a solid base of skills that you can fall back on / on top of which other skills can be built is key.
Otherwise - try and find a few trusted sources of information (there is a lot of opinion out there rather than facts) and follow those to see what might be coming up next.

The key to staying on that leading edge and keeping relevant is continuous learning. Whatever technology field you choose to go into, Communications, Robotics, Health Care, etc... keep reading, learning, and volunteering to step into something you are not familiar with, and dont give up. With anything technology related, change is inevitable, so long as you are changing with it, you wont be left behind.
