Morgan’s Answer

Highly recommend looking for an internship - if not in DC, consider looking at your state and local government for opportunities. I started my career with internships in the US Senate and state legislature. The internships helped expose me to the work environment and build relationships in the field. The experience and networking opportunities will help you figure out what you want to do next.

Nichole’s Answer

Hi Jalen,
Great career choice. Depending on where you currently are with your education, in addition to any course/class work that you may have, extracurricular activities are always a great way to get your feet wet and possibly open some doors. I would consider joining a debate team, or even getting involved in student government or organizations. Volunteering with a campaign that you feel strongly about is huge, and you can have your voice heard before you get the diploma. A few professional organizations that can help you along the way are, The American Political Science Association, The Academy of Political Science and the International Political Science Association. Gaining skills in market research analytics or in a nutshell collecting or assessing data on market conditions, consumer buying habits, and possibly competing companies to predict how a product or service will be received by mass consumers. These folks take data via various methods that may include focus groups, interviews, surveys, etc. To gain knowledge on the publics outlook with some political parties. This can help them determine in some cases can help determine which candidate's voters support and what issues may be important to them. I would also look into public relations - this is huge and a vital skill to have, not just with the degree but in everyday life for any company or group. An outstanding public reputation for any company is vital. With this public speaking skills even the most minute are fine tuned. I would look at possible internships in your area, journalism, social media management (huge this day and age for everyone), policy analytics, legislative analytics. Speak with your admin office, maybe they would need volunteers for programs or initiatives that are close to you. I hope this helps some.

Hello Jalen,

I recommend exploring consulting firms that actively recruit from college campuses. For instance, Deloitte is known for offering such opportunities to fresh graduates. Alternatively, you might want to think about gaining initial professional experience through an internship in the federal sector. Numerous significant agencies, including the State Department, provide internship programs.

Wishing you all the best!
