Skylar, while I can’t speak on funeral director specifically, I feel like a lot of these things translate to any field.

One of the biggest things some new must have is humility. Whether you’re new to the company or new to this role, there are a lot of factors that you do not know so being humble enough to acknowledge that is critical.

Another is being a good people person. This is crucial for the most part you cannot be successful if you’re bad with people.

Either way, be positive In everything you do! That will help you a lot!

Hi Skylar. I am going to list some very simple characteristics that I believe you cannot go wrong with any employer, and certainly are of value in my practice at Deloitte:
- Be on time
- Show up prepared
- Be curious and ask questions...seek learning opportunities
- Be honest, even when it might be an unpopular point of view
- Be kind, inclusive and recognize you a part a greater whole...help your teammates
- Be patient with yourself and your career...it takes time
- Talk to your leader early and often when you have challenges...seeking help is not a weakness
- Be professional and positive in tone, even when pointing out problems and challenges
- Prioritize your well being, and look out for others as well
- Always have a basic plan with awareness of where you are and where you want to go with your career...nobody will do that for you. Share it with your leader regularly.

Hi Skylar! I graduated from college about a year ago and am about 8 months into my professional career. Whether you join Deloitte as a new hire or campus hire or join any company, you can be prepared for how things will go but you ultimately will learn the most once you're fully into your role! Some challenges definitely stem from transitioning from being a student to being a full-time working individual in a totally new atmosphere, with new co-workers, and new working dynamics. It is tough at first being given loads of information and trying to ingest it all at once to understand what you'll be doing in your new role and how you fit into a team. That being said, it's important to be patient and ask lots of questions - there is no such thing as a bad/silly/dumb question! Take everything day by day at first, and slowly but surely, you will get into the routine of things and can focus on learning new skills, what you like doing in your role, and even what you don't like doing. Get to know people, put yourself out there even if it is uncomfortable, and keep a positive mindset. Everything works out in the end.

They are emotionally fragile and physically and mentally drained from dealing with their recent loss. Your compassionate and patient demeanor will make a significant impact.

Even if you're highly skilled at your job, if your attitude towards clients seems dismissive, rude, or uncaring about what they've been through, you risk losing their trust and willingness to work with you. Prioritizing and respecting their humanity above all else will go a long way.

I have profound respect for those working in this industry. You're assisting people in saying their final goodbyes to their loved ones with the highest level of care, making this a truly noble profession. I'm delighted to hear that you're considering it!

Always be open to learning knew things and don't be afraid to ask questions or speak up if you have a suggestion. It could be on how to make a process run smoother or more efficient so don't be nervous to speak up . When coming to a new company some important things to know are:
• Research and look into available public information that can help you feel comfortable with the company history and culture.
• Be inquisitive and willing to learn new processes and systems that one may be unfamiliar with to complete responsibilities.
• Set goals for yourself to meet people on your team or other coworkers in different departments. By expanding your network, you can determine who can help you navigate through the company from the inside.
• When assigned work it is always important to understand what the expectations are from the person who assigned the work.
• Most importantly understand it takes time to adapt to the job so do not be to hard on yourself. Try to learn something new and progress every day.
