We feel like this always comes down to why do we use the latest and greatest technology and how do we best take advantage of it. Every generation has struggled with this question and challenge with upcoming technology that may displace their jobs and we think what's important is how AI will actually create work/jobs. We should understand the appreciate the future and what's coming our way, but also appreciate the past and what tech has gotten us to where we are today.
During your time in school and what remaining time you have left, think about what classes or topics have interested you most or excited you and really lean into those. The great part of technology is you can shift and pivot into roles/careers that are adjacent to this.
Being concerned about AI is completely understandable and a fear that many people have, but it's important to not get lost into chasing a specific career, pay, etc. Really focus on yourself and what brings you joy because that is where you will find the deepest satisfaction from building a career.

Cybersecurity and the other areas that were mentioned are awesome suggestions. As someone that has been in the software development business for a long time (coder, designer, manager) AI is a challenge. My team has been encouraged to embrace AI and use it to hopefully increase their productivity. Software developers that use AI should use it as a start point and not use the code directly (it may not do exactly what you want so it will need investigating). After taking generated code, you will still need to code things on your own. There are also many companies that are implementing AI solutions for their company and will need software developers to work on it

I understand where you're coming from: After wanting to be a software engineer for the longest time, I've decided to switch and focus on design (UX design) and Cybersecurity. I had to do some introspective thinking: I weighed my interests and strengths and am moving towards jobs that match those. Also, the best way to combat AI is to embrace and integrate it into the things you are pursuing so you are ahead. Don't worry too much, as long as you are moving towards your goal, you are on the right track!
