I found that there are prerequisite courses for getting into the ADN program, does that mean I have to take pre reqs for freshman year at college, and then apply to the ADN course?

Bailey’s Answer

Yes that is correct! Luckily it is cheaper to take prerequisites at a community college. Make sure to see an advisor at your school before signing up for classes. You can also test out of some English or math. (I was not that lucky. ) Good Luck!

Heidi’s Answer

The prerequisite requirements are courses you should take freshman year and generally include: anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry and sometimes a certain level math. Each college has its own requirements so be sure to ask or research this information before registering for classes. These need to be taken (or in process) before you can apply for the nursing program. Nursing is getting more competitive so good grades in these prerequisites improve your chances of getting into the nursing program/track. Good luck!!

Martin’s Answer

A bunch of courses have prerequisites, often centered around subjects like math and English, and occasionally medical terms or other basic stuff. These are there to ensure you're all set to tackle the course work that the program demands. In certain situations, you might have the chance to finish these during high school or even bypass them through testing. However, for some programs, you just have to roll up your sleeves and get them done.

Hello, again, Lisa !

It's good to know you've been looking further into the Nursing Programs !

Again, let's take a specific college to use as an example so you can understand what pre-requisites are. They are courses that the college requires that you take as a base before you take other courses for the Nursing Program. You take them in college. Your high school information and grades are different than the Nursing Program pre-requisites for the example I am using again the example of California State University, Sacramento (for their Bachelors Degree in Nursing).

California State University does not mention what you should take in high school, however, they have five pre-requisites which one would take in their Biology Department and their Chemistry Department while you are enrolled at the college. As I have mentioned before, each college is different and it would be different at schools that offer the Associates Degree. You just need to pick a few colleges that you are interested in and actually read their specific requirements. Another example is Evergreen College in San Jose for the Associates Degree in Nursing. The pre-requisites for their program are courses you take at their college in Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology as well as English Composition. You would also have to pass the Test for Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) exam. Information about pre-requisites are usually always listed on the specific college website. I know it may call for a lot of reading but you will need the actual information from the college that you will attend so you know which classes to sign up for in the beginning. You will have to check with the individual nursing department as to when you apply for the nursing program and that information is usually provided on their website.

The easiest way to gather all admissions, pre-requisite and application procedures for any college would be to visit the campus in person and go to their Admissions Department. You will be provided all the information instantly and perhaps be provided with documentation which will make it easy for you to keep on hand and refer to.

Many of the colleges have orientations, tours or Group Information sessions on campus. Once you choose which college you want to go to, read on their website or call for a schedule of the days that these activities take place and attend one. It is always great to obtain general information about something you are wondering about, but the next step is to target the things you need to do to accomplish your specific goal. Much of the preparation for college still needs to be done in person so that information is made clear, current and the staff can provide you with tangible forms and applications that have all the accurate information. When you do visit the campus, also visit the Financial Aid office for information as well as the Student Services Center to see what services are provided to students on that campus.

Best wishes in gathering the information and I hope that you choose a Nursing Program that you really enjoy !

Wilvind’s Answer

I agree with Michelle, every college will have its own pre-requisite so read them well and understand them. High school courses are great but usually a school will have it's own courses that one should take but the basic English, Biology, Math and Chemistry will help. Finish all the prerequisites before the major courses, these will help a lot.
