There are two views to this question in my mind

1. There are professional career coaches that provide a service, for a price, to help evaluate a persons skills and give them suggestions on which direction may be the best for them. That is great if you need that broad perspective from someone who has knowledge if different career paths

2. There is also mentorship. Mentorship is created by a mentee (the person seeking advice) to get with a mentor (someone they trust and had knowledge) to help guide a person through their path. Depending on where you are in your professional career - a mentee/mentor relationship has lots of benefits. A career coach is there only for that one purpose - to help you find a career. A mentor - helps a mentee through their career journey - from finding a career, to dealing with the challenges within your career, to advancing your career and beyond. Your mentors may vary - you may have a mentor at the early stages. Then once in your career - you will have a mentor within that field. And then you may have a mentor that helps you move on. There is no problem with having multiple mentors as well.

Mentor relationships can vary by time and need. A mentor and mentee relationship could last a lifetime (I have had some mentees for over 15 years) or they could be as short as 2 sessions - as long as the need of the mentee is met or any other length of time in between. You and your mentor have to decide how the relationship would work - as you could meet often at the beginning and taper off. You can also meet periodically for a long period of time. I can think you can see - a mentor/mentee relationship is situational

So, yes, someone can use a career coach - but that may be someone who does not know you and is for that one purpose. Finding a mentor could have longer lasting effects and support.
