Hello CVOH,
How to Use AI to Write a Cover Letter
Writing a cover letter can be a daunting task, but leveraging AI tools can simplify the process significantly. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to effectively use AI to craft a compelling cover letter.
Step 1: Choose the Right AI Tool
There are various AI writing tools available that can assist you in drafting your cover letter. Popular options include:
ChatGPT: A conversational AI that can generate text based on prompts.
Grammarly: While primarily a grammar checker, it also offers suggestions for tone and style.
Jasper: An AI content generation tool specifically designed for marketing and professional writing.
Select an AI tool that suits your needs and is user-friendly.
Step 2: Gather Your Information
Before you start using the AI tool, compile all necessary information:
Job Description: Understand the requirements and responsibilities of the position you’re applying for.
Your Resume: Have your resume handy as it contains relevant experiences and skills.
Personal Details: Include your name, contact information, and any specific achievements or projects you want to highlight.
Step 3: Input Relevant Prompts
When using an AI tool like ChatGPT, begin by providing clear prompts. For example:
“Write a cover letter for a software engineering position at XYZ Company.”
“Include my experience with Python and teamwork skills.”
The more specific you are with your prompts, the better the output will be.
Step 4: Review and Customize the Output
Once the AI generates a draft of your cover letter, take time to review it critically:
Check for Relevance: Ensure that the content aligns with the job description.
Personalize It: Add personal anecdotes or specific examples from your career that demonstrate your qualifications.
Adjust Tone and Style: Make sure the tone matches your personality and is appropriate for the industry.
AI-generated text may need adjustments to ensure it sounds authentic and reflects your voice.
Step 5: Edit for Clarity and Grammar
Use tools like Grammarly or Hemingway Editor to refine your cover letter further. These tools can help identify grammatical errors, awkward phrasing, or overly complex sentences. Aim for clarity and conciseness in your writing.
Step 6: Finalize Your Cover Letter
After making all necessary edits, read through your cover letter one last time. Ensure that it flows well from one paragraph to another and maintains a professional tone throughout.
Make sure to format it correctly (e.g., proper salutation, spacing) before saving or printing it out.
Step 7: Seek Feedback
If possible, share your final draft with trusted peers or mentors who can provide constructive feedback. They might catch things you’ve overlooked or suggest improvements based on their experiences.
By following these steps, you can effectively utilize AI tools to create an impactful cover letter that enhances your job application process.

The exciting thing and scary thing is that something like ChatGPT can make this a breeze. You can load your resume and the job description while asking it to make you a cover letter. It really can be that simple.
I’d read it and adjust slightly so it feel as much like you as possible, but with some many people applying for jobs, I don’t think they are being highly scrutinized.

When using AI to write a cover letter in few cases, I follow these steps:
1. Define my goal: I identify the job I'm applying for and the key qualifications.
2. Gather information: I collect details about the company, job description, and required skills.
3. Choose an AI tool: I select a reliable AI writing assistant or cover letter generator.
4. Provide input: I share the job description, my resume, and relevant details with the AI tool.
5. Get AI suggestions: The AI generates a cover letter draft or provides phrases and sentences to use.
6. Customize and edit: I review, modify, and personalize the content to showcase my voice and style.
7. Refine and proofread: I ensure error-free writing, clarity, and coherence.
8. Finalize and use: Once satisfied, I use the AI-generated cover letter as my own!
I remember that AI should assist and inspire, not replace my unique voice and experiences. I use AI-generated content as a starting point, then infuse it with my personality and perspectives.
PS: It’s advisable to find a good cover letter sample shared by professionals with evidence that it was effective. That way, you can tailor it to fit your needs.

Using AI to write cover is a great idea.
I would recommend copying and pasting your resume into the Chat and giving it a command like "build me a cover letter that showcases my strength in XYZ"
Then if it's not to your liking, you can always say something along the lines of "rewrite it and use a voice closer to a 20 year old professional" and keep giving it prompts that change it until you are satisfied.
Keep in mind that you'll also want to rewrite bits and pieces so that it doesn't SOUND like AI.
You can also upload a job description for the job to which you're applying and tell it to tailor it to that job - or you can keep it pretty general and just make sure to change the important parts if you want to send it out en masse.
I hope this helps!
