I would go with the human personal coach. Machines lack empathy, and cannot sense were your real passions are, in regards to personal preferences and selections of a future occupation or school major.

Great question! Your best bet is to use a combination of the two! AI coaches work well to fill in the gaps, answer any questions that might immediately arise, and provide tons of supplemental reading material to support you along the way. However, if you have access to a free or affordable HUMAN career coach, then you benefit from the amazingly wonderful thing that humans provide: real, authentic emotional support and intuitive analysis of your unique situation. A career counselor who knows you well and understands your journey can help you navigate all the ups and downs when deciding which major to choose. They can be there by your side to motivate you when you feel uninspired in Biology class and find yourself questioning all your life choices. AI bots can provide some emotional support, but it feels hollow most of the time because they are not real people. Synthetic empathy works well when you're in a bind and need immediate help, but it's not a long-term solution. Moreover, a human career coach can guide you to the right career path by taking in everything that they've learned about you, cross-check it with their own lived experience, and come up with an idea that you may not have even considered. Again, humans can create new ideas and synthesize data using all the senses (even the 6th sense!), whereas AI merely regurgitates existing data and tries its best to predict an outcome based on that.

If you have to pay for a career coach, and some coaches are extremely expensive, then an AI coach is your best option. AI can provide access to tools, professional advice, and materials that many people cannot afford using traditional methods. In that way, I feel like the technology is scalable and most beneficial.

No matter which method you choose, the most important thing is that you receive professional career counseling early on in your life before you choose a path that is not right for you. I wish I had access to these resources when I was in college!
