Rene’s Answer

Good evening Danny,
There are a whole slew of vocational and technical schools out there that have heavy equipment / construction equipment mechanic programs. Completing one one of these programs will surely allow you to be hired as at least an apprentice machinery mechanic. The downside to those schools is that they're not cheap. And there are other ways to get into the field of heavy equipment repair. If you want to try to go the "on the job training" route, I'd recommend learning hydraulics and electronics in that order at a local community college. And I must add that if you learn electronics you'll almost certainly be employable for the rest of your life. However learning electronics can be very difficult for some people. Some people just don't have the aptitude it takes to understand how electricity works. That's why I suggest learning hydraulics first. For me, my understanding of hydraulics, which I learned first helped me to more easily understand the principles of electron flow. While you're educating yourself you can also get a job with an equipment rental company in the capacity of a yard person. A yard person usually receives equipment being returned off rent and sometimes they'll clean the equipment and store it as well as perform minor maintenance to prepare the equipment to go back out on rent. Such a job usually doesn't require any prerequisites other than a willingness to show up on time. Another option that's always good is to join the military and learn it for free while you're getting paid. The downside to this option is that you might not get the exact training and experience you're after but you'll still be obligated to serve your enlistment.

Rene recommends the following next steps:

Learn hydraulics. Learn it on YouTube if you can't find a local program.
Learn electronics. I recommend going to some sort of school for this
