I've noticed that many of the most diligent IT professionals can become so intensely concentrated on a solution or challenge, that they might overlook the actual goal. I once participated in a transition project where the team was so engrossed in developing something so sophisticated and fail-safe, they were on the verge of not meeting the transition deadline. Moreover, the transition tasks would be handled by a highly skilled team that needed little training, plus they were highly motivated to complete the transition correctly.
Finally, the transition was receiving a lot of attention - but the inventory wasn't, implying that the transition couldn't be adequately monitored. I had to swiftly set up a self-updating inventory system so we could precisely identify who still needed to be targeted and followed up with.
I've discovered that the most effective people in IT are those who work hard without losing sight of the overall objective, focusing on problem-solving rather than technology development or 'experimenting with cool gadgets'. They also stay alert to changing priorities due to economic situations, competition, new capabilities, and other shifts that may need to impact projects.

Cybersecurity is #1. Being familiar with concepts like EDR, XDR, MDR, the different kinds of attacks, how to secure every aspect of the business (SaaS, servers, network, endpoints, mobile devices, identities, etc), backups (devices, servers, SaaS, disaster recovery, etc).
There are several routes to go, so be clear with where you want to spend your time learning. That doesn't mean you have to pick a direction NOW.
Cybersecurity, helpdesk, people management, project management, centralized services (back end management/maintenance), account management, consulting, etc. There's also the lense of technical mastery and what area to focus on: security, Microsoft, AWS, database, data science, networking, compliance, or even going deep with a specific platform like SharePoint, Okta, Jamf, etc.
Finding the balance between being a generalist (knowing a reasonable amount about "everything") vs. being a deep expert in a specific area or a few areas. Spending too much time/energy on being a generalist makes you less desirable for higher paying roles, whereas being too much of a specialist makes it challenging to be perceived as an expert during interviews and working with customers, as it's challenging to solving complex, multifaceted problems.
