Hi Celine, You can try babysitting, dog walking, pet sitting, tutoring younger kids, doing yard work, or running errands for neighbors. Check with local laws and get parental permission. Consider online opportunities like selling crafts or offering services through safe platforms.

Hello, Celine !

I am happy to see that you want to start earning and would be happy to give you some information and advice ! This is a very good question !

The legal age to be employed by an employer in New York State is 14. When you turn 14, visit your school's office and tell them you are there to get a Work Permit. This will give you limited permission to work for some employers. You would not be able to work in a factory, however. It would be a matter of inquiring about openings in your local vicinity and applying for jobs and you can only work after school hours and during vacations/school breaks, not when your classes are in session.

Until you turn 14, you can work freelance, unskilled and not regular jobs (formerly known as odd jobs) here and there in your neighborhood or for people that are in walking distance to where you live. In order to drum up business for yourself, you will need to create a flyer that has the services that you provide and post the flyers around the neighborhood. Things such as snow shoveling, housecleaning and any other skill you have and know you can do can be listed on the flyer. If you need help making the flyer, you can use Canva and I have left the link to their website below.

So think of all the things you enjoy doing and are able to do. Another way to obtain some earnings would be to have yard/garage sales . Ask your family for items that they no longer want and put them in the yard sale. Think of all your skills, crafting, mending clothing, baking running errands in the neighborhood, shoveling snow or yard work. These are the type of things you can do to earn some money. Once you are 14, you will have more opportunities.

I hope that this helps and I wish you all the best !

Hi Celine!

Honestly, I'd highly recommend you to learn some skills. Try to find what you're good at, or what you naturally gravitate towards. I, for instance, discovered much later in life that I have creative skills which I later used to build a career as a graphic designer, and I've been learning and adding new skills to level up my career in visual design, UIUX, web design and digital marketing ever since. But please do keep your focus on education and finish school first. All the best!
