Hi Aiwen!

There are multiple ways to establish connections.

One way to do so is to leverage your current network (teacher, professor, friend, friend's parent, etc) and understand what areas you are interested in. If you have someone in your network that has connections to the area of interest, that creates an easier opportunity to generate a meaningful connection.

You also can utilize LinkedIn since they have a feature called "groups" where those with a specific interest can connect through the platform to discuss the interest (i.e., project management, public speaking, finance, etc).

Another opportunity is college job fairs where you can meet people within the industry of interest to learn more about their role, existing opportunities, and other people to connect with.

All of these could lead to further connections and resources to expand your network. A good tip is when you're wrapping up conversations with those in your network about your preferred interest, ask if they have additional connections or resources they could provide you for continued education on the topic.

Even a small conversation can work towards expanding your network, you never know where someone has connections. Best of luck as you continue the networking/establishing connection journey!

Hi Aiwen,

Thanks for asking this important question - Creating connection with people is an important skill to have and it will serve you in whatever career path you choose.

When you want to establish connection, it's always a good idea to introduce yourself, establish and maintain eye contact, ask questions and actively listen. Be your authentic self and provide space for others to be themselves as well. Respect differences and lead with kindness.

If you are specifically interested in a person's educational or career path, ask if they would be willing to answer some questions for you about their own experience. Come prepared with questions and always respect the time someone spends with you. Be gracious and thank them for their advice.

Lastly, remember that people will not always remember what you say, but they will always remember how you made them feel.

I hope this advice is helpful for you - I wish you all the best in your learning journey ahead.

Great you're thinking about maintaining good connections. This will be helpful not only for future career opportunities but also for your personal life. In general, try to build good relationships with everyone you meet. You probably already know what's important to make that happen such as being friendly, going out of your way for others, and always scattering kindness.

Don't be overly concerned about your future. Most folks live long lives and you want to enjoy the journey!

With every good wish.

Dilara’s Answer

LinkedIn is an excellent platform for maintaining relationships with individuals. I recognize that establishing new connections can be challenging, but the key is to stay 'relevant' to your intended audience or community. By understanding their primary concerns and priorities, you can effectively build a relationship. This approach is not only beneficial but also empowering, as it facilitates meaningful interactions and mutual growth.

Donna’s Answer

I agree with Karen on the importance of building good relationships. Additionally, ask people in your own community/village to introduce you to their contacts or someone in their network. Aim to do this monthly and set up a coffee chat with each new person. This can help you expand your own network effectively.

Raphael’s Answer

To build and maintain a strong network, start by getting involved in school activities related to your interests, such as art clubs, business clubs, or student government. These activities can introduce you to like-minded peers and mentors. Attend local events for aspiring professionals, and don't hesitate to introduce yourself to professionals. It’s important to be genuine and show interest in their work. Put your best foot forward on social media platforms like LinkedIn to connect with professionals in your desired field. Personalize your connection requests with a brief message explaining your interest in their work and how you found them. Always follow up after meeting someone new; a simple thank-you email or a message expressing your appreciation for their time can go a long way. Volunteering for community projects or internships, even if they are short-term or unpaid, can provide valuable experience and connections. Networking is not just about what others can do for you, but also how you can contribute to their network. Good luck!
