Hi Dakota! To further your career, consider reflecting on a specific aspect of your career you want to develop. Is it a new skill, getting experience in a new industry, building your network, etc.? Once you have a specific topic in mind, look for someone with that experience to mentor you! Even one phone call can make a big difference to get their advice. Then, look into learning resources on that topic and dive in. I love visiting local bookstores or exploring YouTube to learn about a new topic!

Perry’s Answer
Short answer:
One: You have to figure out what career you want to have. You will ultimately have to figure this out for yourself [but you can sort through advice from friends and family].
Two: Then learn what kind of training is required for your career, and how to best do it.
Three: Learn how to keep your career going well after you have completed your training.
And always give 100% effort, the best that you can do.

Hi Dakota,
Some other options for you consider in addition to those that others already suggested, is to volunteer at your current position for new projects, extra work or assignments that come up. Not only will this be appreciated and remembered by your manager but frequently this exposes you to new work, departments, collegeaues and allowed you to learn new things and grow. Also, another option is to find a mentor in your organization and me with them for advice, ideas, contacts, counsel, etc. In my own case, I had an executive as a mentor and he really opened was instrumental in helping me personally grow and improve in so many ways, including my networks and relationships.
Best,
Tony

Try to also find examples of role models whose careers that you would like to replicate. See what they did at each step, maybe even talk to them about their approach if you know them personally and use that as inspiration for how you make decisions.

To further your career, a great place to start is by looking at people—both inside and outside your company—who are in roles you aspire to. Reach out to them and ask how they got there. Most people are happy to share their experiences, and their insights can help you figure out your next steps.
Also, seek out mentors and sponsors in your company. A mentor can guide you and give advice on growing in your field, while a sponsor can advocate for you when opportunities arise. Personally, this has been key to my own growth, and it’s something I’d highly recommend.
Don’t hesitate to take the initiative—set up conversations, ask questions, and stay curious. You’ll not only gain valuable advice but may discover new interests and paths along the way. You’ve got this!
