Joseph’s Answer

Hello Giovanni!

Before Project Management I did some specialty in Security and Law Enforcement and worked with several people that had went through Job Corps. All of them spoke highly of their educational opportunities through Job Corps but the common theme was having the right headspace and understanding when entering the Security Trade. Knowing that the hours will be mostly nocturnal, require a lot of stamina and endurance because of the size of some facilities you work, and require honing a mental /intellectual toughness. The last part always confused me until one colleague and I were working a case together. When I asked what he meant, he said that working long hours alone in the silence can be mentally draining and take a toll on you over time. He built a fortitude for it by studying Philosophy and would have intellectual discussions with himself while doing rounds. This inspired me to try to do the same and there have been times I was very thankful that I worked on my intellectual stamina as he suggested.

The security trade, especially in a tech hub like San Jose, is dynamic and fast-paced. You’ll find a mix of physical security roles and cybersecurity positions, reflecting the area’s focus on technology. Collaboration is key, as professionals often work with law enforcement and tech teams to ensure safety. The environment can be challenging, requiring quick thinking and adaptability, but it’s also rewarding, as you contribute to protecting people and assets. Networking opportunities are abundant, given the local tech community!

TRAVIS’s Answer

Hello and Congrats on your Job Corps scholarship. The Security Trade environment can vary greatly depending on your assignment. It is a good entry point for higher career opportunities. For example, if you complete your basic training and have good attendance and conduct you should also consider continuing your training to the advanced or college level while at the job corps. It is possible to graduate from the job corps with a college Associates Degree if you have a college program associated with your Job Corps or transfer to another one that offers advanced training. Many students move into correctional officer training or apply for policy academies. I strongly suggest pursuing as much training as possible while you attend. 3yrs sounds like a long time, but you have the whole rest of your life to enjoy the benefits of your effort and hard work now. Your future self will thank you for it. Be sure to ask your counselor what some good long term training options are available to you. Good luck. You will do well.
