Katelyn’s Answer

The Salary Range can vary. Some people make 20k and some can make above 80k. Its all depends on what type of photography you want to go into and how much work you would like to or can do. A lot of people start off freelancing part time then move into full time when the time is right. Another variable is where you are located. Smaller towns will have smaller budgets and less competition and larger cities will have more money to go around but a lot of competition. Its all about setting yourself apart from the rest and networking with the rest of the photography community.

Eric’s Answer

Hi Emma,
It's a tough career choice and most of us are not working a salaried job; we are free lance photographers, independent contractors. It's nice being self employed but it is something like being unemployed - you're always looking for work! It takes a certain kind of person to start their own business because you will have good times and bad times. Many large companies have photographers who work for them full time and they pay average salaries and the work can get boring. (I've done a lot of catalogs.)
The answer to your question is not simple. I'll go with Katelyn, the photographer who said between 20k and 80k per year. This has been my experience. Just remember this: if you are very good at what you do, the rewards are great.
