Where to start when looking for a job?

I'm worried about when I graduate college and haven't found a job yet. Is it necessary to find a job immediately after college? What's the process like? I'm trying to major in social psychology so are opportunities hard or easy to come by?

Hi Irene! The timing for getting a job after college can be tricky and it can depend on what your life looks like/what goals you have. For me, I knew I wanted to have a job lined up after graduation to be able to save up money. I lived with my parents that summer after graduation, started my 9-5, and was able to move out in the fall to my first apartment with a friend. Since moving out and making a little bit of money was important to me, I took looking for a job seriously my spring semester of my senior year. I also had summer internships the past 2 years and worked during the school year as well to get experience.

When senior year spring semester rolled around, I had some experience. I reached out to my past managers at my internships to see if those companies had any opportunities available. I also kept an eye out on Linkedin for recent grad programs and went to my school's job fairs. Doing this can be really stressful but you can do it! Throughout this process, I got some interviews, and finally landed a role. Don't put too much pressure on having something lined up immediately right after college (if you are able to). Put yourself out there, have questions ready to ask employers, share your experience & willingness to learn, and it will happen! Good luck!

It is important to find work in a field that you would like to pursue. However, it is also important to focus on your studies. Try contacting your school's career development department to see if they know of any internships that you can apply to.

Hi Irene! Graduating without a job lined up can be extremely stressful! I didn't have one myself & didn't want to settle on anything just because I needed/wanted a job. Start researching now for things that interest you. Create a LinkedIn to be able to see the jobs that are out there, and create a profile to show off your accomplishments once you've graduated. You can follow companies you're interested in there and see what kind of opportunities they have. I majored in Psychology as well, but currently work in Telecommunications. My path led me here and I'm completely okay with it, so just be open! Goodluck with everything!
