How do I prepare for life after college, like what can I get myself into when it comes to a job?
I’m about to graduate college soon and I’m not sure what I’m doing and I need help when it comes to finding a job and getting things together. I major in business but I’m also interested in nursing, real estate or having an Airbnb business.

I'd suggest kick-starting your journey by securing a position in the field that piques your interest, be it healthcare, real estate, or any other. This initial step of getting your foot in the door opens up a world of exploration for you.
Consider expanding your horizons by joining relevant groups on LinkedIn. There's plenty of groups dedicated to healthcare and real estate that could provide valuable insights.
Always remember, there's no such thing as a mistake in this journey. Every job you undertake will enrich you with priceless experience and knowledge. Here's to your success!

Having an idea what you want to do is an important first step - congratulations on narrowing it down to these three fun roles. Next thing I'd recommend is tell everyone you know what you are interested in and ask them to connect you with anyone they know doing these jobs. Reach out to those people and ask for 30 minutes of their time to ask questions - things like how to get an entry level job in that field, what does a month in the life look like, what do they find most fulfilling about the job, and what is most challenging. This information will help you narrow your choice down further.
I also recommend the book What Color is Your Parachute to college students. Its a workbook that is updated yearly and takes you through questions that help you narrow down what environment you like to work in (indoors, outdoors, home offices, etc), what types of things you like to do day to day (sell stuff, solve stuff, build stuff), what industries interest you. At the end you have a clear picture of the roles and industries that might really bring you joy.
Ask friends and family to introduce you to people in the careers you are interested in
Reach out and ask for a 30 mins phone call, prepare questions to ask them about their jobs
Use that information to narrow your field of interest
Check out the book What Color is Your Parachute

As a student of business, you have an excellent foundation to explore diverse opportunities. Certain fields, like nursing and real estate that you pointed out, necessitate additional studies or certifications. If you're certain, you might want to start pursuing these immediately. However, if you're undecided due to the vast differences between these fields, consider reaching out to professionals in your areas of interest. Engage in discussions with them, seek their advice, and if possible, spend some time observing their work firsthand.
The same approach can be used if you're contemplating starting your own business. Try to connect with individuals who have successfully established their businesses. A good initial step might be to first gain employment in a relevant business sector. This can provide you with valuable insights into the operational aspects before you venture out on your own.

Hi Mia,
Congratulations on nearing the finish line of your college journey! That's such an exciting time, albeit a bit daunting too, I understand. Since you're majoring in business and also have interests in nursing, real estate, and running an Airbnb business, you have a unique opportunity to explore various career paths.
To kick off your job search, identify what aspects of your business degree you enjoy most — is it marketing, finance, management? Tailoring your search based on your strengths can make things a lot more navigable. Since you’re in Pasadena, look into local internships or entry-level positions in established firms; many businesses look for fresh perspectives and energy. Websites like Handshake or LinkedIn are great for finding these opportunities.
If nursing is calling out to you, consider looking into programs that allow you to bridge your undergraduate degree into nursing. Some schools have accelerated BSN programs designed for students who already hold a degree. Given the growing demand for healthcare professionals, this could be a transformative pathway for you.
On the business side, if real estate interests you, it might be worth taking a real estate course to get licensed in California. Networking at local real estate meetups can provide insights and potentially valuable connections. You could even shadow established agents to learn the ropes.
Lastly, regarding the Airbnb venture, many consider starting this as a side hustle while pursuing other careers. Research your city’s regulations regarding short-term rentals; some areas have specific rules to follow. Check out courses on platforms like Udemy that can help guide you through successful Airbnb management strategies.
Explore all these paths, and remember, it’s about finding what resonates most with you — good luck!

2. Develop Skills for the Job Market
Business Students: Hone your communication, project management, and data analysis skills.
Nursing Students: Consider getting certified or shadow healthcare professionals to learn more.
Real Estate/Airbnb Enthusiasts: Familiarize yourself with property laws, marketing, and customer relations.
3. Polish Your Resume
Showcase your college projects, internships, and leadership roles. Make sure it's tailored to suit the job you're eyeing.
4. Engage in Networking
Leverage platforms like LinkedIn and local gatherings to mingle with professionals. Don't hesitate to request informational interviews in your preferred fields.
5. Tips for Job Hunting
Begin with entry-level positions or programs like management traineeships. Make use of job boards, your college's career services, and platforms specific to your industry.
6. Gear Up for Interviews
Practice answering typical questions and highlight your transferable skills. Do your homework on the companies to make a memorable impression.
7. Keep an Open Mind
Remember, it's perfectly fine to explore different avenues; your first job won't dictate your entire career. Concentrate on making progress, not achieving perfection, and take steps that align with your interests and aspirations!

Reflect on what attracts you to these diverse fields—business, nursing, real estate, and Airbnb. Take into account your talents, principles, and passions. For instance, are you drawn to direct interaction with people, assisting others, initiating new projects, or overseeing a business? If the thrill of entrepreneurship stirs you, you might think about starting small, such as managing a rental property on a part-time basis. This could offer you a taste of the hospitality industry while also allowing you to experiment with running a business. If your heart is set on venturing into real estate, you should start by familiarizing yourself with the certification requirements in your locality. You might want to kick-start your journey with an internship or a part-time position in real estate to dip your toes in the water.
Thank you!

First, take time to reflect, breath and pause. You might feel a sense of urgency or pressure to have it all figured but its an ever-changing journey. Taking care of yourself before anything else will provide you with the mental clarity you need to navigate your career descisions. Based on your interest I can tell you're not afraid of change and taking ownership. I would bet you enjoy trying new things, problem solving and building authentic relationships. You want to work directly with people and provide a type of service.
Once you've given yourself some time to breath after graduating, reflect and a make a simple yet comprehensive skill set list that highlights where you will add those most value and have examples to back them up. Think less about the job you want and focus on skills that you want to leverage to motivate your work.

Looking back, I applied to literally anything that looked interesting that I felt I had some experience/skills for. I tweaked my resume for every single job posting, based on what the job description said it was looking for. I'd keep doing that until I actually get an offer and then have some choices!
