Nicole’s Answer

My advice to you is that there isn't a perfect career. Every path has sacrifices. You can get somewhere fast, go somewhere interesting, have great benefits / flexibility, or make lots of money. But rarely do you get all at once.

Think long term about what's important to you.

Do you want to travel the world? Money might matter. You may want to pick a specialized career with high pay and limited competition,
Do you want to be a parent? Flexibility might be important. You may want a job that gives you good insurance and time off, like in business.
Do you hate school? Working behind a desk may not be for you. A trade program might be best.
Do you have a passion worth following? What would you give up to pursue it full time?

Just keep in mind that choosing one may sacrifice the other.

Think about the classes and hobbies that interest you now. Explore the majors and jobs related to it. Then weigh them against the factors above.

Trisha’s Answer

Hi Kate, sometimes people know exactly what they want to do and others find their way. Keep in mind your career will evolve and change. Have you taken a class in school you really like? Do you like to work outside, want to help others. It's important to think about what will be exciting and something you will enjoy doing each day. Talking to people about what they do and how they got into it may help you as well. Sometimes a hobby can become a career. The sky is the limit. Trisha

Hitesh’s Answer

Hi Kate, This is a good question. I wish I had asked the same back in my days as a student! I hope to share some of my learnings which you might find helpful. Either doing a job or running your own business/start-up, one tends to spend good 30+ years of their life dedicated to their career. One of the most common motivation behind the career planning is about seeking financial security to live a life you desire while supporting people who depends (or going to become dependent) on you. Aspirant often miss the other most important aspect of career planning, that is your interests and passion. Most commonly, as a student your interests and passions are not defined or known. In my opinion, a career plan aligned with ones interest and passion is best way to get the most out of your working and personal life. So, how do you go about it? Please refer to below steps which I think help you figure it all out for yourself. All the best!

Hitesh recommends the following next steps:

Make a list of your interest areas and what are you generally passionate about. Don't worry if this list is too long!
Review the list with someone who knows about you, friends, family, relatives, teachers, all these can help.
Narrow down the list to top 3 areas.
Pursue activities - e.g. projects, workshops, online courses, You tube videos related to your top 3 areas.
Connect with people who have experience, expertise in the top 3 areas selected by you and seek their guidance for developing your interest areas further.

Angel’s Answer

Choosing and navigating a career involves self-reflection, research, and planning. Start by identifying your interests, strengths, and values. Ask yourself what you’re passionate about, what skills you excel at, and what kind of work environment you prefer. Next, explore various fields that align with these attributes—conduct informational interviews, shadow professionals, or intern to gain firsthand experience. Research the job market and potential career growth opportunities. Once you’ve narrowed your focus, consider further education, certifications, or training that may be needed. Stay adaptable, as career paths often evolve, and continuous learning will help you stay competitive and fulfilled in your career journey.
