Hello Barry,

Embarking on a journey to discover your career path is incredibly exciting! Start by creating a list of activities that engage you. In San Francisco's vibrant atmosphere, you can tap into local events, art shows, or tech meetups to see what sparks your passion. You could also consider joining a community group—perhaps a coding bootcamp like General Assembly, which allows you to dive into tech while meeting like-minded individuals.

Don’t forget to explore the idea of job shadowing. This can be a game-changer in understanding what a job entails. If there's a specific role that intrigues you, try to find someone in that field and arrange a shadowing day. For example, if you’re interested in UX design, observe how they conduct user testing. Observing day-to-day operations can provide clarity on whether a career aligns with your interests.

More importantly, always embrace spontaneity! Say yes to opportunities that may seem tangential at first. You might stumble into design thinking workshops, coding hackathons, or entrepreneurial circles that open new doors. The key is to remain curious and adaptable. Enjoy the journey ahead!
Take care.

Finding out what you want to do is a journey of self-discovery, and your approach is a solid roadmap! Start by exploring different fields—take courses, read books, or shadow professionals in areas that intrigue you. Use online resources like YouTube, LinkedIn Learning, or industry blogs to get a feel for what excites you. Next, get hands-on experience, whether through internships, freelance work, or projects. Networking with people in those fields can offer invaluable insights. Once you've zeroed in on a career, build the necessary skills through formal education or self-learning. Most importantly, stay curious, be open to change, and have fun as you dive deeper!

Hi Barry! I hope this message finds you well. In order to find out what you want to do in terms of a career I would suggest making a list of things that interest you. What do you find interesting, or what can you see yourself doing? Are you interest in animals? Technology? Medical? Once you make a list, research careers in that area. Once you have a list of options, you can come back on here and ask the many of us who might be in that field how we like it, what our days look like, or whatever comes to mind that you want to know. Another option is to find someone local that may be in the field that you can ask in person. Both of these options give a better insight to the career that you may be looking at. You could also look at doing some shadowing. For example, my daughter has just started nursing school and was able to shadow a nurse at a local hospital, this has given her a good idea of what her days will look like and what she is getting into.

I hope this helps!

Hi Barry - I would start from my own list of roles that I would like to explore, and what I feel I am good at. Technical fields, literature, arts, teaching? Make a list of areas of interest and what skills you think you should develop. Then I would meet with friends, teachers and colleagues to discuss - ask for feedback. You will decide in the the end what you want to do, but it's important to hear also what others think. I would then check online if there are explanations and more insights, once I have narrowed down the list of roles that I think can be suitable. Then again research on possible job demands.. are the 3-4 roles I would like to do one day available where I live or what are the requirements. Am I prepared for those requirements? How much time should I give myself to learn to get to a certain level for that role I want to do. If you join any school groups or if the libraries advertise.. you may be able to make direct ''on the job experience''.. you might discard some ideas, or reformulate based on that direct experience. But you need to give yourself some time to plan and don't make any hasty decisions.. once you collected the material that could help you narrow down to the roles you would like, again check with people you know (and that know you well) and see what they also think.

Your direct experience, the information on those roles combined with open discussions with the people you trust will help you make the right selection. Good luck!
