Is underwater welding really that hard on your body. Also, how hard is it to get into, and what qualifications are needed?

I am a high school student who is wondering this for a career project. I have started welding in a fabrication shop and hear that an underwater welder's average life is 35-40 years, but they also make good money.

I am a high school student doing a career project about welding. I have started practicing, and I just started work in a fabrication shop. The work is really interesting and exciting. I am looking to further my career in this and want to know all I can.
