Hi Jennifer,
Being a baker, in general, can be a stressful job but it can also be therapeutic. Running a business in general can be stressful but if you enjoy what you do, there is a different mentality to the whole thing.
Before running a business, make sure that you have proper training in all aspects of a business including "hospitality". Train with different bakers in different aspects. Bakers in a "mom and pop" shop will have different training as one for a major company, baking company, or even a production company or restaurant. Make sure that you know what you are doing and what a baker does.
Some problems that some owners run into is that no one has taught them that there is a right way and an arrogant way to run a business.
Hopefully you have chosen to go with the right way. Yes, there will be times when the arrogant part has to rear its ugly head but hopefully that will be almost never or at least once a year, when some patrons decide that they are privileged.
Hopefully, you will have incredible backups in the baking and decorating parts of the bakery.
Making sure the company runs right is your responsibility and that everyone has what they need to make the day run smoothly.
Always make sure that your employees know what their job is and what you are expecting out of them.
Do not treat them as hired help but treat them as friends and show respect.
Make sure that they know their limits and do not allow them to go beyond that unless you trust them.
Why did I choose this field?.
Baking and Cake decorating is a form of art. You can make it or break it.
I choose to make it. I have been taught by some of the most incredible talented bakers who are also food scientists.
They will show you things that no education can show you.
Each baker has their own talents, hidden talents. Let them show you it and then take it and put that knowledge in your back pocket.
Safe that for a rainy day, so to say.
Just because you own a bakery, doesn't mean that you know it all.
Educate yourself in the latest and greatest.
There are some companies that will train you in their products and they will explain why some breads decide to not rise or about how the cold will effect the rising of the breads.
I do this because it is therapeutic and it can relieve stress plus the smell of a bakery is incredible.
