Thank You for the Support—Need Help Writing an Email to My Professor?

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to thank all of you who took the time to offer me advice and support on my last post about my struggles in Organic Chemistry. I’ve decided to reach out to my professor to explain my circumstances and ask for possible ways to bump my grade.

This semester has been extremely challenging for me, both academically and personally, and I want to communicate that in my email while staying professional and respectful. My plan is to:

Share briefly how this semester has been tough for me.
Ask if there’s a possibility of doing an extra assignment or project to improve my grade.
Politely request if she could review my tests to see if there’s any way I might earn back points.
The issue is, I’m really struggling with how to start and structure the email. I want to sound professional but also sincere. Does anyone have tips or examples of a sample email I could use as a guide? I’d really appreciate the help!

Thanks in advance for any advice, and thank you again for all the encouragement. It means a lot!

Hello Angel,

Here is an email draft you can send to your professor. It’s structured to be professional, concise, and conveys sincerity while ensuring your request is both respectful and clear.

Subject: Request for Assistance in Organic Chemistry

Dear Professor [Last Name],

I hope this email finds you well. I am reaching out regarding my performance in Organic Chemistry this semester. It has been a particularly challenging time for me, both academically and personally, and I wanted to share a bit of context while seeking guidance on ways to improve my grade.

I deeply value the opportunity to learn in your class, and I am committed to doing whatever it takes to perform better. With that in mind, I wanted to ask if there might be any possibility of:
1. Completing an extra assignment or project to earn additional points.
2. Having my previous tests reviewed to see if there are any areas where I might have missed points due to errors or oversight.

I understand that maintaining fairness for all students is important, and I greatly appreciate any advice or assistance you can offer. I want to ensure I’m doing everything within my power to improve and learn from this experience.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my request. Please let me know if there is a good time to discuss this further or if you would prefer I schedule an appointment during your office hours.

Sincerely,
Angel [Last Name]

Best wishes!

Hello Angel

I’m Miss Takieaa. I actually had to do that about four years ago, so I understand your desperation. With all communication, both verbal and written, trust yourself and your instincts. Take your time and think about what you need to say. Start and end the correspondence with a compliment. Remember that you are speaking with your instructor who has an earnest interest in wanting to see you succeed in their classroom, virtual or onsite. Write an outline if you have chosen to write a formal email.

Also, as concerned as I was, I didn’t have to beg or plead. My Instructor 👨🏾‍🏫 was kind enough to allow me to complete all the assignments etc. I had not done and some extras as well. And, so you have it easier next semester, ask your counselor if they could share some time management strategies and skills with you. I was distracted easily and needed some tips to implement so I was able to succeed. Even though I started out strong, I noticed I didn’t have the strong support I thought I had. The people I thought were happy for me were actually jealous of me and successfully caused me to destroy my own efforts. But, once I learned how to manage my time correctly and set solid boundaries I was able to regain my stride and graduate with honors.

I hope you are able to succeed and have an abundant and great life!
