Hey Kay,
Okay, so you're 13 and want to start making some cash while getting your life together—let's make it happen! 😎 First off, you can totally dive into jobs like babysitting (basically being a mini-superhero for parents), dog walking (basically getting paid to hang with cute pups), or mowing lawns (because who doesn’t love a freshly cut lawn?). You could also help around the neighborhood by organizing stuff or even tutoring younger kids. Basically, anything that says “I can handle responsibility” is a win. Just make sure to check the rules in your area, because there are some legal limits to how much you can work at your age.
Now, onto scholarships! You’re a fabulous, unique, and awesome person, and there are actually scholarships out there to support you, especially if you're LGBTQ+. 🎉 Some cool ones to look into:
1. The Point Foundation: This one’s like the VIP pass for LGBTQ+ students who wanna go to college and make a big impact in the world. 🌍
2. Pride Foundation: They’re all about supporting LGBTQ+ students with scholarships that help you pursue your dreams.
3. Local LGBTQ+ groups: Your local LGBTQ+ organizations might have scholarship opportunities just waiting for you to snatch 'em up! Think of them like treasure chests hidden in the community.
So, my advice? Start by making money doing stuff that doesn’t make you want to pull your hair out (unless it’s dog hair, because that’s just part of the job 🐶). And for scholarships, just be your awesome self and find the groups and foundations that match your vibes. Start the search early, and you’ll be rocking those opportunities in no time!
All the best Kay hope helped clear something out buddy! 😉

Hello, Kay !
I remember you from November 26, 2024 when you asked for advice here about needing "scholarships quick" because you need to get your "masters degree". You also said you were going to do home school college. Is this still what you are planning to do ?
There are no Gifted Schools in Charleston, South Carolina, rather some schools offer a Gifted Program as you said before that you "go to a gifted school". South Carolina Connections Academy, College of Charleston and the Charleston Public Schools do offer a gifted PROGRAM for 9th to 12th graders, that is 14 to 17 or 18 year olds. The program has to do with classes and activities geared towards more advanced study as well as dual enrollment in college, not graduating school at age 13.
There are conditions around a 13 year old receiving scholarships. The money you receive from the scholarship may have to be held in escrow until you enroll in college. Three scholarships that you can apply for at age 13 are the Action for Nature Eco-Hero Award, which has a maximum award of $500 for ages 8-16, and the Haiku Contest for Kids, which offers a maximum award of $50 for grades 7-12. Additionally, the Courage in Student Journalism Awards are available for grades 7-12 with a maximum award of $5,000.
Being in a gifted program requires your parents to take a crucial role and oversee your education and the processes. This means that you and your parents need to meet with the program director to discuss college and scholarships if you are graduating school at age 13. There is no path to graduate school at age 13 in Charleston, SC. South Carolina has specific requirements for graduating high school.
As for jobs at age 13, you would qualify for the Summer Service-Learning Institute which is not a job but is offered by the Youth Volunteer Corps. They provide volunteer opportunities and teach how to be job ready and it's open to ages 11 to 18. The other two employment programs for youth in Charleston can start when you are 15 and 16 years old.
Because your circumstances are unique and specific, generalized advice is not enough, you and your parent will need to trust your school to give you accurate and local information about scholarships and employment programs. Remember that scholarships will not cover homeschool college. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
