Know that you are still young and in no way need to pick a career path right now. Many, I'd say most, people don't go down the career path they thought they would in high school, and that's fine. I didn't even know my career existed when I was in high school.

My advice would be to start thinking about your interests, values, strengths, self-care, and life goals before you start down any specific career path.

-What do you enjoy doing? Are there any classes that you find particularly interesting and that you've learned more about on your own time? If no classes have interested you, what about clubs or hobbies?

-What do you think is important? Do you like teamwork or independence? Physical work or more intellectual work? Working with people? Creating something new? Fixing things?

-What are you good at? Writing, understanding technology, talking to people, art, working with your hands, etc?

-What do you need to feel secure and happy? Do you want a big paycheck or would a smaller but sufficient paycheck be fine? Lots of guidance or lots of independence? Flexibility or structure in your work schedule? Work at a facility or from home?

-What do you want to achieve? Do you want to have a family, buy property, live in a small town, a city, etc?

Answering these questions can help you find out what kind of job, in what setting and with what structure, you would be happy doing.

Molly’s Answer

Hello Kassnadra!

This is a great question! Simply answered, I would recommend to step your foot into multiple areas. If you find that what you are currently in or studying does not satisfy and appeal to what you want to do in the future, then you can easily shift away from that one area and focus in another. In college, I knew that I wanted to focus my studies in general business. However, that is all I knew. After focusing my studies in multiple areas of business, I found my way into Human Resources where I currently am working in today. I received my MBA focusing specifically in Organizational Behavior and Human Resources, and currently have a position as an Human Resources Administrator for a Sam's Club distribution and fulfillment center. You will never know what you like until you dip your foot in the water and tread through several areas!

I hope this helped, and good luck in your endeavors!

Thank you
Molly H.

I am going to say something that may be controversial. If you are unsure what to do in life and what kind of job you want, then do not focus on what you are passionate about, what you like, etc. Look at any job where you think "hmm. gee, I don't know. I don't think I would like that" and take that job.

Why?

You may very well hate that job and quit but if you use it as a learning experience it could help you tremendously.

If you hate going to that job every day, then ask yourself why? what specifically did you hate about going into work? What would have to change for you to enjoy going to that job?

If you can't stand your manager, then why? what specifically did you not like about him/her? Was it their attitude? they way they treated you? their management style? etc. What kind of manager would that person have to be for you to be happy working for him/her?

If you dislike the environment, then why? was it being indoors? being in an office? was it the general culture of the environment? what specifically would have to change for that environment to feel right for you?

Did you like working with others? why or why not? Would you rather work primarily by yourself or be part of a team? What specifically caused you issues with others? Is it possible that your attitude may have contributed to that and you may need to change? Would you rather be on the team, or lead a team?

Did you enjoy the commute? was it too long? too much traffic?

Did you hate the hours? was it the length of hours per day? the start/end time? working an occasional weekend? What kind of workday would feel better for you?

If you are not sure what you want to do, then sometimes getting clarity on what you don't want to do can be very insightful and help you to better understand what you really want.

Hope this unorthodox approach helps you and others that don't know what they want or how to start.

Hello Kassndra, it's completely okay if you're uncertain about your future career at this moment. There are numerous methods you can employ to discover your true calling. One approach could be to take online assessments that can help steer your career direction based on your personal traits, likes, dislikes, and your strengths and weaknesses. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a great starting point. Here's the link: https://www.mbtionline.com/en-US/

Moreover, you can explore various careers in your daily life. Are there any adults in your life with jobs that pique your interest? You could have a conversation with them or even conduct a mini-interview. Additionally, you can have a discussion with your school teachers about this.

If you find the idea of a desk job uninteresting, then it's certainly not the right choice for you! It's fantastic that you're considering your career options at this stage - you're definitely on the right track to finding a profession that you'll love and find rewarding!
