There are many steps to becoming a counselor. Firstly, it is important to get a Bachelor's Degree. It can be done in any field, but doing your undergraduate in Psychology would give you the understanding of the human brain, body, and emotions. This will be extremely useful as understanding those is key to being a good counselor. Next, you will have to obtain a masters (or if you want, a PhD). This requires you to send in transcripts, letters of recommendation, intention statements, GRE/MAT test scores, and other applications. Note that finding an accredited APA school will be useful as those can provide certification to be a counselor. Once you have applied and been selected, choose the program you want. A guidance counselor could fall under school psychology or even counseling psychology. After you have taken the classes needed for your graduate degree, a bar exam will be taken to give you certification as a counselor. This will certify that you can work anywhere within the state where you live. It may seem like a long and daunting process, but be aware that, if taken step by step, it will all work it.
I am currently an Undergrad in psychology and applying to graduate schools to get my masters within the next year! If you are passionate and put effort into your classes, it is doable and you will succeed. Don't be afraid to shoot for your goals!
